Modern Music's Death By Auto-Tune

I knew there was something wrong with modern music, I just didn't know what!

Its not human voices singing anymore. Music used to be a soothing REAL thing that helped the soul. For 20 years or more now it has been souless autotune robotic voices. Its why young people have no soul.

It's also the reason why there are so many young people doing reaction videos of earlier genres of music like classic rock, blues, jazz and oldies rock. They are fun to watch, they are often amazed when they watch live concert footage of bands having never seen anything like it, musicians playing their own instruments and singing live, singers doing amazing things before autotune existed. Melodies, harmonies, raw emotion human emotion, all things they can't experience listening to and watching the videos of current day music.

Some bands block reaction vids for copywrite infringement which is just stupid. They should be encouraging young generations to discover and buy their music and keep their legacy alive now that they are all in their 70s or better. I enjoy watching reaction videos. It takes me back in time to the day I heard those songs for the first time. Good music is timeless. Hopefully it inspires a new generation of musicians to go back to the roots and get creative.

Not just Auto-Tune, but music sound level compression. There is no dynamic range in music anymore. All music is peaked across the board so that is LOUD on the radio. You no longer go from soft delicate notes to booming bass, it's all just LOUD.

All modern pop music sounds the same, because it is almost all written by only 3 songwriters.

You have artists that have had 20 top ten hits, but very few people can even name one song. They are not iconic songs, as songs of the past are. No one will remember the words to these song in 2 years time.

And then there are all those great singers on The Voice , yet we get stuck with crap auto tune.

They also have made it a crime to have any kind of vibrato.
Gwen Stefani used to have a unique vibrato , but now she sings flat Ike she is ashamed of it. Probably because it outshines all her record company other newer auto tune artist

Ok I will reveal some secret industry insight. I have an old high school friend who was once a real musician and then became a studio engineer.

His bread and butter are rappers and he explained how this hip hop community works. He now has worked on some of the biggest artist in the biz, household names.

The rappers get their money from drug dealing , its ego, laundering, collection of women, being stars at the club, validation of identity. Drug Dealing is at the root of all hip hop.

The reason why there is so much creativity and talent in the 60s and early 70s is because there was no mold yet, record companies hadn't taken the reigns, marketing still was considered a way to sell a product, not a set formula to "write and perform" songs around. Musicians still had creative freedom to just create and love what they did. In the late 70s and 80s big money took over. Some musicians you have probably heard of that were not allowed to put the songs they considered their best work on their album and were forced by the label to do songs they hated to match the marketing vision of the record execs.

One example is none other than Tom Petty. The record label didn't want to put Free Fallin on the album because it didn't fit the image they wanted to create for him. Lucky for us, Tom was already a big name and musician's musician and he never backed down. But if some relatively unknown artist had written Free Fallin, they wouldn't have had that kind of clout and we never would have heard the song.

The industry doesn't care a fig about talent, creativity, and good song writing and arrangements. Today they spit out songs that obey their formula which they believe is the key to making money.

As Joe Jackson once said, "Right now
I think I'm gonna plan a new trend
Because the line on the graph's getting low
And we can't have that

But I can sell you anything

So true, and the frequency is off, too.

In the old days we would have been in the audience with a bunch of sweaty bodies......now you can be right there on stage with them in the comfort of your own home!

There are some that are even younger, have only ever been exposed to rap and hip hop and modern pop. They are literally left with their mouths hanging open when they watch the likes of Freddie Mercury, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Janis Joplin, Rush, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd. I love watching them have the revelation that they have been missing something so exquisite that they didn't even know existed.

Young people seem to be soulless because they’ve rejected God for science and worldly/human things. The bad music is just one of many symptoms of this.

he has another video where he talks about how rock 'died' in 1996 (or 97). it's worth a watch, too.

the 'volume wars', auto-tune or pitch correction, and quantizing (moving every note to perfectly fit the measure with no variations in tempo) all had a role in killing rock.

but honestly, the concert and Official videos are so new to me, I feel like those kids when I watch and listen!

Familiar music, but the videos are a whole new experience for me!

Most of the reaction video tunes I'm seeing are not my favorites--but the talent and quality of the musicians are far superior to today.
