We live in an incredible place, surrounded by breathtaking beauty and wonderful, thoughtful, and hardworking people. Silverton regularly faces hard times, and this community always overcomes the challenges we face, together. We are resilient.

However, this is not the paradise it could be. Our community harbors, and even supports, bullying. The National Institute of Health defines bullying as, “unwanted aggressive behavior by another person or group of people.” Bullying can take many forms and is nearly as widespread with adults as it is with children.

Gary Namie, the director of the Workplace Bullying Institute, describes a bully as someone having “a need to control other people, because something in their own life is not in control.” Namie further expands that “adult bullies are skilled at being covert. There is a level of sophistication.”

Silverton’s bullies position their repetitive harassment as advocacy, assuming the hero role on behalf of the community, fighting the corruption of those in power.

Since being elected as Mayor, I’ve been subject to frequent bullying. Unfortunately, our society normalizes this type of abuse as something to be expected for any type of public service leadership role. I knew and accepted this before I ran for office, and I can take it.

What finally compelled me to speak out is that I am now witnessing insults, threats, and insinuations being hurled at my fellow trustees, town staff, and community members. I will not be someone who does nothing while I watch a small number of individuals divide this community and hurt my fellow community members. I will not stop holding myself and my fellow trustees accountable for our fiduciary duties and contractual obligations as elected officials. I will not be intimidated because someone calls me names or makes false accusations. And, I will not be a passive or hurtful bystander, while bullies attack my fellow community members.

If we do not stand up to bullying, it will deter community members from contributing, it will perpetuate our reputation of dysfunction, and it will diminish the quality of life in Silverton.

So, how can you be part of a solution that reduces bullying in our community? Based on the specific type of bullying most prevalent in Silverton today, there are a few things each of us can do. First, don’t be a passive or hurtful bystander by participating in gossiping, whispering, and spreading of misinformation. Second, get informed. This is a small community, get to know your neighbor. When you hear hurtful or harmful information about another person, instead of continuing the spread of that information, go directly to the person who is the subject matter of the information and ask them about it. Get the facts, end the rumor.

Let’s go ahead and clarify a few more issues that seem to lead to the spread of misinformation within our community:

A community member choosing not to be informed does not equal a lack of information.

A community member choosing not to participate does not equal a lack of public engagement.

Disagreeing with a plan or a decision does not equal corruption by a decision maker.
