All modern vehicles can be hacked. Remotely controlled, made to crash or be shut down. All with a smartphone ap. It's all control. No thanks.
 Quoting: Icey

no they can't. it's nonsense. some vehicles have remote access, only some and you can circumvent that.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72237694

you can't circumvent it.

it's built into the engine management system

you would need to be a computer programmer and completely bypass the computer

perhaps if you were a genius computer programmer yes, other than that, no
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79104722

it can easily be circumvented. i was software and hardware patching immobilizers out of ecu's decades ago.

i could build you an ecu off the top of my head.

this is usual scare tactics.

old cars were not breaking often enough.

you can't just switch off a modern car either. it may be possible with some. but also easily circumvented too.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72237694

The engine management system is connected to the radio now.

And yes, they can shut the car engine off, Onstar had complete control of your car 10 years ago.

In fact several car chases where ended when Onstar disabled the vehicles during the chases.

 Quoting: Miller_The_Bastard_Cat

i understand this technology perfectly. electronics, ecu's, packet data etc.

im telling you the ability to remotely switch off a car is not in most vehicles at all.

it would be ovbious to those of us hacking the ecu's

there maybe telemetry data sending back to the manufacturer using radio waves.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72237694

it's the manufacturer's who have the power to shut off these cars

it's not hard, send a signal and the pcu is bricked

like i said if you are a genius computer programmer you might be able to by pass it

but it would be very hard

12 years ago, Obama announced a program to jump start our economy, and get people into new cars... New cars with engine management systems built into the radios, that can be remotely shut off!
This is from 2009: [link to abcnews.go.com (secure)]

And the old cars, that can't be remotely turned off, got crushed. In fact, ALL the parts, of the cars turned in, had to be destroyed! The engines drained of oil, coolant drained, and they ran the engines full throttle until they blew up.

They wanted to get rid of the vehicles that they couldn't turn off...

I already studied mine. I bought a separate remote circuit that can turn on anything with an antenna for the few seconds it is needed to unlock and start, then shut it off. If I dont do that they are going to shut it off the day the warranty goes out. They already did. Two months early. I work a political job and "they" hate me and damn well WILL brick the car if possible. Fortunately they gave me a good warning by bricking it 2 months before the warranty was up. Phone call went like: "Unbrick this NOW or you're paying for a warranty tow AND getting it working again. five minutes later, like magic it worked again.

imo, they wanted big engines that could out run the cops in chases off the road. there is easier ways of stopping travel or sectioning off areas. i-40 that i know of has cables that when i had a flat i noticed are insulitated where the metal poles go in the ground, would make a fine electric fence. not sure if that is with intent or if they are put in the ground like they are for another reason.
