Family is travelling across the country for 2 weeks: Bad idea? Or a really, really, REALLY bad idea? Or am I the one who's completely insane?

Sounds like you’re talking yourself out of it. This world is fine. Just stay out the big cities......... and maybe Walmarts lol

Searching for it on GLP gives 8+ pages of results. It's not Pittsburgh, but it's hardly a small town.

What cities will they be travelling through? I personally don't think it's a good time to be travelling. Crime is way up and being in a place you don't know isn't good.

Put lots of trump stickers on your car, hand paint “all lives matter” on your back window, celebrate diversity and take the inner city scenic loop

My family traveled back and forth form SD to CA to Lancaster/ McClure Penn all the time growing up in the 70's and 80's. It was long and boring. That is when my drinking problem began as well. I used to drink a lot of water and soda just to force my father to stop the car so I could get out for awhile. LOL!

Sometimes we went in a Truck with a camper shell or in the back of the sedan. Back than we didn't have to wear a seat belt so we could at least spread out a little. We preferred the truck naturally, but then we would end up sleeping in rest area's to save money.

It was rare to stop along the way over all. But we did get to stay in cheap motels a lot of times too. It took about four days. It sucked for us kids crammed in the back of the car. We did play lots of driving games though to pass the time. Like looking for names in alphabetical order.

If you are doing two weeks it sounds like you are stopping to have experiences. I think you will do just fine.

Be prepared. If you have not planned an activity outside the car everyday, they are going to complain the whole time.

I don't know anything. If I had anything solid to go on I'd gladly share it. All I know is that some people operate entirely on schedules. So if we all have "no choice" but to travel excessively just for a holiday, we might have no choice but to do other things in return. Ironically I'm talking about freedom.


I haven't made the trip in years, but it's mostly on one highway. I'm not so much worried about that part except that it's just a stupidly long drive.

And it's our home town, so they know their way around.

I'm mostly just worried about total lockdown happening at precisely the worst moment we could ask for. Plus the fact that as I said, they have "no choice" but to possibly walk into a terrible situation.

Well there’s the obvious places to avoid such as East St. Louis and Chicago south side, and anywhere near Detroit. But I’m sure you know that. The real question is will things go to shit in the next two weeks? You would be away from your place and your preps etc.

Oh I should have mentioned, its a straight 12 hour trip, or maybe split over 2 days with a hotel, and then a 2 week visit.

I didn't realize I phrased the title in a way that could be misinterpreted, sorry about that.

So at the worst they'll be stuck living with my brother for a few weeks, or wasting money on a hotel. But my mother deals with some mild health issues already. If it goes as planned she'll be fine, but if not, it just feels way too risky right now.

Maybe next month I wouldn't be quite as worried, but God only knows what they're planning.
