Reminds me of when i was very little, after a really bad car crash we were in. Mom's teeth were wired shut after her jaw was crushed. She would wake up panicking when she would catch a cold with her nose stopped up,because she couldn't breathe well. She lost a lot of weight, down to about 87 pounds, at 5 foot 3. She wore it for 6 weeks, IIRC. Scary to witness when you are only 6.
