Lewis, 25, fled the Lower Paxton home and Derrick Hutcherson shot her in the face, officials said in a news conference Wednesday. Still, she was able to run 100 yards or more to get help from a neighbor. Meanwhile, Hutcherson barricaded himself in her apartment. Neighbors called 911 and police were on the scene within two minutes. Lewis gave officers detailed information that helped them avoid getting injured by Hutcherson and establish a quick perimeter around the apartment where he was holed up with his 2-year-old son named Ace, and Lewis’ 79-year-old grandmother, Wanda Jackson. Police called Lewis a “strong woman” who tragically lost an eye from the bullet. Law enforcement officials expressed gratitude and relief Wednesday while discussing the actions that helped them peacefully resolve the incredibly tense and dangerous 33-hour standoff this week. Several times during the negotiations, police officers said Hutcherson made comments that made the hair stand up on the back of their necks.
