My Grandfather was one of 3,000 Men in the US 106th Infantry that were ordered by US command to lay down their rifles and surrender to the Nazis on Dec 21st 1944. They were loaded into Boxcars headed to Nazi Stalag 4B. Grandfather weighed 89lbs when that camp was liberated. Enlisted weight was 160lbs. Blue-eyed Christian for the record.

But if you knew anything about WWII you would know that late in 1944 with the war lost the people of Warsaw Poland rose up against their Nazi occupiers. The Germans were finally able to overcome the uprising and Hitler ordered that the city be destroyed. With the Soviets within a couple of hundred miles and the western Allies pushing across France Hitler order the men, fuel and explosives to destroy 25 churches, 14 libraries, 145 schools, virtually all the historic buildings in the city as well as hospitals, and even the roads! The Nazis wasted a lot of resources throughout the war on things like that.

Likewise with the Holocaust they killed many people and used precious resources to do it. But it didn't create much of a shortage of people since the Nazis seized 12-15 million civilians, mostly from Eastern Europe to be slave labor. Many of these slave laborers died in the dangerous and unsanitary work camps.

So the Germans came up with a better way to kill people on an industrial scale without soldiers having to just shoot men, women and children.
