Question for you preppers
I have been going through all my bugout supplies and I came across several cases of can Ravioli and corn that is 10 years old. Would you throw it or keep?

Thanks

Re: Question for you preppers
When it is acidic or has meat you can tell by the smell.

The corn I would throw out...why take a chance?

The ravioli is acidic (tomato sauce) and has meat...your nose will tell you if it's bad.

I think that's why they put that stupid little piece of pork in pork & beans.

Thank you. I'll ditch the corn and use the smell test for the other.

Better yet...dump the corn in your compost pile...fertilize your garden with it (after it breaks down).

I opened an old can of chili about a month ago and it didn't smell "bad"...but it had this metallic smell to it...I decided to throw it out.

Better safe than sorry.

I have an extra fridge and I never look in it because it's for random birthday cakes or other stored stuff.

I looked in it to put cupcakes in it and I have all these huge wholesale bags of dried fruit and nuts that I ordered a year ago.

It's been refrigerated but should I discard or keep?

I've eaten cans of soup and other things that were 5 years beyond the expiration date and they were fine. But I wouldn't risk it with things like corn or green beans.

How hungry are you?

As long as the can isn't puffy or the seals rusty or broken, what's inside is probably still good.

It might not taste great, but it won't kill you.

Hungry people used to eat their boots.

Re: Question for you preppers
You didn't rotate?

The US Navy tested canned food that was many decades old. They found in every case that it was safe to eat. They also found that most of the nutritional content was gone and that the food was not very appetizing. I believe some of this food was 50 years old.

I have seen 2 or 3 cans swollen. So it is possible for canned food to spoil, but not likely.

Check for swollen cans...best get rid of them before they explode rotten food all over the room.
