It may have been a scout for the 300mile sphere that slowed down on entering our solar system and maintains course against gravitational pulls.

The only way to find out is to search the sky for unusual objects. This is the rationale behind The Galileo Project that I am leading. The project will be publicly announced on July 26th, 2021 as a research endeavor to assemble and transparently analyze open scientific data collected by new telescopes. This multi-million dollar project is funded by private donors who approached me after reading my book Extraterrestrial or listening to the numerous interviews that followed its publication. Subsequently, I assembled an exceptional research team that plans to construct a network of new telescopes and monitor the sky for any unusual objects near Earth. When searching the sky in a new way, one is likely to discover something new.

Re: BREAKING, JULY 26! Harvard Univ Galileo Project takes hunt for aliens mainstream!! Openly says: Oumuamua is probably an alien spacecraft!
The Galileo Project research group will aim to identify the nature of UAP and ‘Oumuamua-like interstellar objects using the standard scientific method based on a transparent analysis of open scientific data to be collected using optimized instruments.

The Galileo Project follows three major avenues of research:

Obtain High-resolution, Multi-detector UAP Images, Discover their Nature:

A picture is worth a thousand words. For example, a megapixel image of the surface of a human-scale UAP object at a distance of a mile will allow to distinguish the label: “Made in Country X” from the potential alternative “Made by ETC Y” on a nearby exoplanet in our galaxy. This goal will be accomplished by searching for UAP with a network of mid-sized, high-resolution telescopes and detector arrays with suitable cameras and computer systems, distributed in select locations. The data will be open to the public and the scientific analysis will be transparent.

We anticipate extensive Artificial Intelligence/Deep Learning (AI/DL) and algorithmic approaches to differentiate atmospheric phenomena from birds, balloons, commercial or consumer drones, and from potential technological objects of terrestrial or other origin surveying our planet, such as satellites. For the purpose of high contrast imaging, each telescope will be part of a detector array of orthogonal and complementary capabilities from radar, Doppler radar and high-resolution synthetic aperture radar to high-resolution, large camera visible range and infrared band telescopes. If an ETC is discovered to be surveying Earth using UAP, then we have to assume that the ETC has mastered passive radar, optical and infrared technologies. In such a case, our systematic study of such detected UAP will be enhanced by means of high-performance, integrated and multi-wavelength detector arrays.

2. Search for and In-Depth Research on ‘Oumuamua-like Interstellar Objects:

The Galileo Project research group also will utilize existing and future astronomical surveys, such as the future Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST)[1] at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory (VRO), to discover and monitor the properties of interstellar visitors to the Solar system.

We will conceptualize and design, potentially in collaboration with interested space agencies or space ventures, a launch-ready space mission to image unusual interstellar objects such as ‘Oumuamua by intercepting their trajectories on their approach to the Sun or by using ground-based survey telescopes to discover interstellar meteors.

3. Search for Potential ETC Satellites:

Discovering potential 1 meter-scale or smaller satellites that may be exploring Earth, e.g., in polar orbits a few hundred km above Earth, may become feasible with VRO in 2023 and later, but if radar, optical and infrared technologies have been mastered by an ETC, then very sophisticated large telescopes on Earth might be required. We will design advanced algorithmic and AI/DL object recognition and fast filtering methods that the Galileo Project intends to deploy, initially on non-orbiting telescopes.

Re: BREAKING, JULY 26! Harvard Univ Galileo Project takes hunt for aliens mainstream!! Openly says: Oumuamua is probably an alien spacecraft!
Meech and fellow researchers initially investigated the object’s origin and found no evidence it is linked to alien life.

“It’s certainly intriguing to creatively speculate what the physical nature of something is when it is the first of its kind—this is part of exploration and discovery,” said Meech. “However, one has to follow scientific principles. Everything we have seen with ʻOumuamua is entirely consistent with it being a comet. We can’t prove it, because we had too little time and it was too faint to get all the data we would like, but that is a poor reason to declare it is alien technology.”

Meech and the international team of 14 experts, including IfA astronomer Robert Jedicke only had a brief window to closely analyze ʻOumuamua before it headed away from the Earth and Sun and rapidly faded from view. Astronomers zeroed in on the object 24-hours a day for about a week, although a little additional data was obtained (mostly from space telescopes) for 2 more months. Based on the evidence gathered, the team strongly suggests that ʻOumuamua has a purely natural origin and must have an extremely elongated shape, like a cigar unlike any known object in our solar system.

“This is all the data we will ever have,” Meech explained. “The data was consistent with it being a comet from another star system. It was observed to be accelerating out of the solar system at a rate that we often see for comets. Comet acceleration is caused by uneven outgassing that acts like rocket thrusters. We didn’t detect either gas or dust near ʻOumuamua and on this basis, Loeb has declared it is alien technology.”

Re: BREAKING, JULY 26! Harvard Univ Galileo Project takes hunt for aliens mainstream!! Openly says: Oumuamua is probably an alien spacecraft!
The multi-institutional, international Galileo Project founders, research team and advisory boards, in conjunction with the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, today announce the Galileo Project (website: projects.iq.harvard.edu/galileo). It is a transparent scientific project to advance a systematic experimental search for cross-validated evidence of potential astro-archeological artifacts or active technical equipment made by putative existing or extinct extraterrestrial technological civilizations (ETCs).

The goal of the Galileo Project is to bring the search for extraterrestrial technological signatures from accidental or anecdotal observations and legends to the mainstream of transparent, validated and systematic scientific research.

Professor Avi Loeb, head of the Galileo Project, explains: "In 2017, the world for the first time observed an interstellar object, called 'Oumuamua, that was briefly visiting our solar system. Based on astronomical observations, 'Oumuamua turned out to have highly anomalous properties that defy well-understood natural explanations. We can only speculate whether 'Oumuamua may be explained by never seen before natural explanations, or by stretching our imagination to 'Oumuamua perhaps being an extraterrestrial technological object, similar to a very thin light-sail or communications dish, which would fit the astronomical data rather well."

Professor Loeb continues[ii]: "After the recent release of the ODNI report on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP), the scientific community needs the determination to systematically, scientifically and transparently look for potential evidence of extraterrestrial technological equipment. The impact of any discovery of extraterrestrial technology on science, our technology, and on our entire world view, would be enormous."

Are there intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations capable of building technologies that can travel between the stars? An international research project is poised to find out.

The Galileo Project, helmed by a multi-institutional team of scientists led by Avi Loeb, a professor of science in the Department of Astronomy at Harvard University, will seek and investigate evidence that could represent defunct or still-active "extraterrestrial technological civilizations," or ETCs, project representatives said in a statement released on Monday (July 26).

The project will analyze data from astronomical surveys and telescope observations, and design new algorithms using artificial intelligence (AI), in order to identify potential interstellar travelers, alien-built satellites and unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), according to the statement.

while traditional SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) efforts have often focused on either finding less-intelligent life or detecting radio waves, Loeb has taken a different approach: cameras and garbage.
“The idea is to use a new network of telescopes and cameras to collect data into a computer system so we can analyze it, spot notable phenomena and track it,” he explained to The Jerusalem Post.
And Loeb isn’t speculating that these anomalies exist. We’ve seen them before.

“As humans we should be proud of any AI systems we bring to existence, as if they were our children. In just the same way as we educate our kids, we could endow such systems with the blueprint for their future interaction with the world,” observes Harvard astrophysicist, Avi Loeb in an email to The Daily Galaxy. “This would include our preferred set of values, goals and guiding principles, which will enable them to learn from experience and cope with reality,” he adds. “Ultimately, we may launch our AI systems for interstellar travel towards distant destinations, such as habitable planets around other stars, where they could reproduce themselves with the help of accompanying 3D printers.

The Search for Extraterrestrial AI Systems

“If other technological civilizations predated us, they may have done so already,” concludes Loeb. “I recently initiated a new Galileo Project to search for such AI systems of extraterrestrial origin.”

“There’s currently an AI revolution, and we see artificial intelligence getting smarter and smarter by the day,” Susan Schneider, an associate professor of cognitive science and philosophy at the University of Connecticut who has written about the intersection of SETI and AI, says. “That suggests to me something similar may be going on at other points in the universe. Once a society creates the technology that could put them in touch with the cosmos, they are only a few hundred years away from changing their own paradigm from biology to AI.”

QUOTE: I wrote a paper in 2009 calculating the number of interstellar rocks based on what is known about the solar system and assuming that these rocks were ejected from similar planetary systems orbiting other stars. The population of objects required to explain the discovery of ‘Oumuamua exceeds the expected number of interstellar rocks per unit volume by orders of magnitude. In fact, there should be a quadrillion ‘Oumuamua-like objects within the solar system at any given time, if they are distributed on random trajectories with equal probability of moving in all directions.

But the number is reasonable if ‘Oumuamua was an artificial object on a targeted mission towards the sun, aimed to collect data from the habitable region near Earth. One might even wonder whether ‘Oumuamua might have been retrieving data from probes that were already sprinkled on Earth at an earlier time. In such a case, ‘Oumuamua’s thin, flat shape could have been that of a receiver. Hence, ‘Oumuamua was pushed by sunlight not for the purpose of propulsion but as a byproduct of its thin flat shape. '

A similar push by reflection of sunlight without a cometary tail were the traits of an artificial rocket booster that was identified in 2020 by the same Pan-STARRS telescope that discovered ‘Oumuamua. This artificial object named 2020 SO was not designed to be a solar sail but had thin walls with a large surface-to-mass ratio for a different purpose.

At this time, the possibility that any UAP are extraterrestrial is highly speculative. But if we entertain this possibility for fun, then the tumbling motion of ‘Oumuamua could potentially have been meant to scan signals from all viewing directions. A predecessor to ‘Oumuamua could have been a craft that deposited small probes into the Earth’s atmosphere without being noticed, because it visited before Pan-STARRS started its operations. Along this imaginative line of reasoning, ‘Oumuamua could have arranged to appear as coming from the neutral local standard of rest, which serves as the local “galactic parking lot,” so that its origin would remain unknown.

But rather than simply wonder about possible scenarios, we should collect better scientific data and clarify the nature of UAP. This can be done by deploying state-of-the-art cameras on wide-field telescopes that monitor the sky. The sky is not classified; only government-owned sensors are. By searching for unusual phenomena in the same geographical locations from where the UAP reports came, scientists could clear up the mystery in a transparent analysis of open data.

As noted in my recent book Extraterrestrial, I do not enjoy science fiction stories because the story lines often violate the laws of physics. But we should be open-minded to the possibility that science will one day reveal a reality that was previously considered as fiction.

Re: BREAKING, JULY 26! Harvard Univ Galileo Project takes hunt for aliens mainstream!! Openly says: Oumuamua is probably an alien spacecraft!
A new project to hunt down evidence of alien life in the universe has been announced, with the Galileo Project seeing Harvard lead a group of scientists determined to figure out whether or not we’re alone in space. Combining ground telescopes, AI, and more, the research will focus on physical examples of alien intelligence, rather than electromagnetic signals from distant civilizations.

The goal is to find real scientific evidence for existing or extinct extraterrestrial technological civilizations, or ETCs. As an example of what future occurrences might be of interest, Galileo Project head Professor Avi Loeb points to the mysterious ‘Oumuamua first spotted in 2017.

‘Oumuamua was an elongated, pancake-shaped rock that passed through our solar system. Its fly-by may have been brief, but it prompted plenty of speculation about just what the object could be. That was only fueled when astronomers identified atypical qualities not usually associated with asteroids.

“Based on astronomical observations, ‘Oumuamua turned out to have highly anomalous properties that defy well-understood natural explanations,” Loeb points out. “We can only speculate whether ‘Oumuamua may be explained by never seen before natural explanations, or by stretching our imagination to ‘Oumuamua perhaps being an extraterrestrial technological object, similar to a very thin light-sail or communications dish, which would fit the astronomical data rather well.”

July 26, by Avi Leob!!

In the courtroom, eyewitness testimony can lead to a life sentence in jail. But in science, such testimony is of limited value. Science mandates quantitative measurements by instruments, removing the subjective impressions of humans from the balance scale of reliability. This is for a good reason. Some people truly believe in a reality that does not exist, either because of hallucinations or as a consequence of deep psychological forces that drive them to ignore facts, especially those that are not flattering to their forecasts or ego.

Similarly, one-time events—miracles, for example—do not have scientific credibility. Science rests on reproducible results that can be replicated by creating similar circumstances over and over again.

The nature of credible scientific evidence is particularly critical in the context of unidentified flying objects (UFOs). Past reports constitute a mixed bag, containing eyewitness testimonies and low-quality instrumental data. In a recent interview about my book Extraterrestrial, a journalist referred to the astronomical discovery of the weird interstellar object ‘Oumuamua as if it were a UFO report.

Rather than dismiss the Pentagon evidence as insufficient, scientists should be motivated to replicate it with better instruments. This is the rationale for the new Galileo Project that I initiated recently to scientifically explore the nature of UAP. The primary objective of this research endeavor is to bring the search for extraterrestrial technological signatures of extraterrestrial technological civilizations (ETCs) from accidental or anecdotal observations to the mainstream of transparent, validated and systematic scientific research.

For the purpose of high-contrast imaging, each telescope will be part of a detector array of complementary capabilities from radar systems to optical and infrared cameras on telescopes. Parallax could also help to map the motion of objects in three dimensions. For example, two telescopes separated by three feet would see an object at a distance as large as 10 miles with a resolvable angular separation of ten arcseconds.

The second goal of the Galileo Project involves searching for ‘Oumuamua-like interstellar objects.
