Gardeners/Farmers of GLP, HELP!
This is only my second year of gardening. But now that I have all my fertilizing and planting techniques down pat, and have BEAUTIFUL, gorgeous, lucious plants loaded with fruit/veggies, I have one serious problem.

CATERPILLARS!!! In a matter of two days my tomatoes and peppers are infested!! I picked off atleast 100 and they have reproduced so damn rapidly and are just destroying my crops. I wanna cry.

What can I use to keep caterpillars and critters away!? Any special pesticides (organic) or flowers that will deter them!?

Thanks ahead! hfheartbreak

You can use pesticides like neem oil, which is a handy thing to keep around for a variety of gardening problems.

If you have a handful of tomato plants, you can pick them off (wear gloves) and smash them with your boot on the ground.
Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face.

I will pick up some neem oil thanks. I have been killing those things like crazy but they are reproducing faster than I can possibly keep up with. TONS of babies. My husband sprayed the ground around but away from the plants with pesticide. I also have some diatomaceous earth. Could I use that also?

Epsom salts and water sprayed onto onto the plant leaves. Do every fortnight. Also get some marigolds. They attract ladybirds and they eat caterpillars and any other pests really. I put marigolds in little baskets so they can be moved around.

i read that diatomaceous earth doesn't help with caterpillars because they're covered with so much slime.

Re: Gardeners/Farmers of GLP, HELP!
spread (sprinkle) a good layer of the D.E. on the ground around the plants.
Spray the plants with the Neem Oil mixture (find a good recipe on the net - oil + soap + water)
Prune your tomato plants too.
And "plant" a Rolaids tablet (or other calcium carbonate tab) next to each tomato plant. Tomatoes need calcium which keeps them healthy and strong.
Good luck.

DE will work for potato bugs (roly polys) but I don't think it'll work with caterpillars. To apply DE, just dust it around on the plants, being careful not to inhale the dust.

If you don't mind chemical pesticides, rotenone is generated from certain plants and that's a dust you apply, it works I've used it before.

The only safe way is manual picking.

Or spraying with water daily on the leaves.

Yes, the spice will work. Whatever you have at hand, Neem oil is most convenient.

May be convenient if you live close to town to be able to buy it
Not convenient if you got to wait 2-3 for delivery

By then you’ll have tomato stem stubs left. Thats all

Use the neem as close to dawn/dusk as you can. Organic, therefore unstable compounds (eg. degrade in UV light).

In other words; if you spray it during the day in sunlight; you'll join those that say; uhhhhhhh it doesn't work.

Sevin is the only thing that works on tent insects.

You can try dawn. Sometimes water can freak them out and cause them to run to the tops of leaves if you water the undersides.

Do you have caterpillars or slugs? Slugs are slimy but caterpillars usually are not. Neem oil for caterpillars, but I would think diatomaceous Human Grade earth would work on both. Also a dish of beer will attract slugs. Make sure dish is deep enough that they'll drown in the beer when they go for it. Other option with slugs is put wide copper wire around the tomato plants. Slugs cannot cross cooper because it interacts with their slime and shocks them. Good luck! Gardening is always a learning experience, even for experts. No year is the same! :-)

hesright

Healthy organic plants will release pheromones that attract predator wasps when the plant is damages by caterpillars. These wasps feed on said caterpillars.
