I'm not sure this is any sort of smoking gun.
COVID is a bunch of shit as we all know but imagine a reporter asking some dumb spokesperson with a poli sci degree at an energy briefing to comment on a how a nuclear reactor works and they'd say the same thing, that they have expert scientists working on it and providing them with generalities.

Yours is close but in her position pushing the particular agenda they are pushing I would have said: "That's a great question of which I don't know the answer to, but I will find out the exact testing protocol and methodology used to determine that this variant is real differentiate this variant and relay what I find out to you. Thank you for your very smart question!" and move on.
