I don't know about anyone else but this doesn't sit very well with me!

This is the sort of creeping authoritarianism that bothers me a lot.

Are they going to stop doing DUI checkpoints because of this?

You fucking know they won't!

This isn't something to make you more free, this is something designed to make you much less free in fact.

Back in the 60s & 70s the Dems were the party of anti-authoritarianism.

Hard to believe how complete the role reversal is.

Now it's Conservatives that are skeptical of war and anti-regulation.

Stunning really.

Timothy Leary must be astral turning in his grave.

As someone who got caught up in the DUI racket twice and other times blew a .08, I'd rather have my car refuse to start until I'm under their BS safety number then pop a DUI because my tail light and headlight were out as with what happened to me. Never pulled over for my driving always some cockamamie that did me in and their .08 is complete bs.

Think deeper. Use of DUI ploy to get a restrictive handle onto all vehicles is the beginning

Then. When you speak out they also shut your vehicle off. Under guise of. You may be a danger and ram it into something in retaliation

Now pick up that can citizen

Things like this are how Nancy Pelosi become a multi-millionaire on a congressional salary.

Who do you think got the kickbacks for mandating an unnecessary $3k system for every single vehicle?
 Quoting: Depluribus Unum

hesright

Arguing with people about it also a complete waste of time, all you can do is hope the courts stop it when the auto manufacturers sue. The inbuilt "big brother is always right" mentality that most people have will never let them see this for what it is, a loss of fundamental rights and an intrusion on personal privacy. Frankly the way our world has gone I have a suspicion that by the time I die, it'll be a relief.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79761689

Auto manufacturers won't sue. They love it. They add their profit margin on top of the cost of the breathalyzer, and don't have to worry about it because their competition does too.
 Quoting: Depluribus Unum

What if your onboard computer says you are good but the pice pull u over and on their gear you are over, will the manufacturer be responsible? Can they be sued for damages?

Who provides tech support if u are sober and the computet locks your engine, what if this causes u damages, can u file a lawsuit?

I can see reasons the automotive companies would push back on this

Yep…but I’m wondering what comes with this new little ‘feature?’ What package of legislation will shortly follow after the MSM peppers the airwaves for a good six months about the units being disabled? What the ‘outraged citizenry’ will be screaming for?

I’m guessing annual/biannual inspections…mandatory stops and checkpoints…remote reporting…the works. Oh and all backed up by punishingly high fines and/or loss of license and vehicle.

Yeah, there’s going to be a whole, giant, stinking wave of bullshit that flows in deep with this…and the ‘majority’ will have welcomed it.

Exactly! Plus, it works several ways in their favor. Consumers have already shown that they will greatly overpay for a new car just as long as their payments stay relatively the same. The banks are more than happy to comply by offering longer and longer terms and compounding that interest. Americans deeper and deeper in debt allows for more control.

Doesn’t matter to me, I use Uber/Lyft when I go out drinking. $25-$40 now versus $10,000 dollars and a 20% rise in premiums later. No brainer. Quit being so cheap.

I love the people who shrug off each and every example of MASSIVE government overreach because it ‘doesn’t effect them.’

Well…eventually it will get to something that affects you. And with the rapid pace that this is all accelerating, it will likely be sooner rather than later.

Are they going to put these at the entrances to the Congress Buildings that the elected representatives are then REQUIRED to go through as they go in and out of the various buildings and in and out of the House and Senate Chambers?

Having SOBER Congressmen/women and Senators is even MORE MPORTANT to the health and safety of the country than sober vehicle drivers!!

Of course if they do this then every passenger getting on any plane, train or bus should be required to blow into one too before being allowed to board those conveyance vehicles!!

Congressional-Corruption is probably America's top problem, yet no one wants to address these criminal actions by the CONgrist Critters.

You, Amerikka, deservedly get the fully fucked-up whored-out massively-corrupted 'government' that you voted for. Or, via apathetic default, was allowed to steal, in election after election after election after election after .....

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80550127

Well I'm glad that it will keep you off the road, but it's a bit of a nuisance for those of us who just don't drive if they've been drinking.

But I do agree that BAC is very subjective. Some people are perfectly fine at .08, and others are stupid passout drunk at .04. It should be based on capability to operate the machine.
 Quoting: Depluribus Unum

Bullshit. .04 is 1 beer. I don't know anyone who is drunk on 1 beer, much less 2.

I used one of those drink counter apps once that estimates your BAC based on the alcohol content and frequency just to see where I was with it out of curiosity. I didn't even feel a buzz until the thing said .12 and didn't start to feel drunk until it said .16. So, that would be 4 beers in an hour. I'd say that's quite a bit if you're going out for a night of drinking at the bar. I don't know anyone who goes out and drinks like this.

I would say, if you're drinking 4 beers an hour the problem isn't your driving its that you're a total drunk.

Frankly, a lot of these people who get sloshed at the bar aren't sloshed because they drank at the bar... they drink all day long and then go to the bar and drink some more and then drive home and drink some more.

The police, on the other hand, will sit a couple blocks down from a bar and then look for excuses to pop moderate drinkers who aren't drunk with a DUI while claiming they're "saving the world."
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80694035

I'm talking about small girls. Some of them get sloshed on nothing at all.

Everything in a car breaks at some point, and the manufacturers are never liable. Even if your brakes go out on a hill and you plow over a playground full of kids, the manufacturers aren't liable.

Try to see this for what it is - another opportunity for the crooks in government to abuse authority to line their pockets.

Same as if your transmission goes out. You're stuck until a tow truck comes. Difference is, there will be no incentive to provide quality, because it is mandatory.
