BRITNEY SPEARS has told family and friends she intends to marry her paparazzo lover Adnan Ghalib in a Scientology marriage ceremony.

The troubled singer, 26, phoned an aide with the news from a beach in Mexico, where she fled by private jet with Ghalib, 35, last week.

She is due to appear before a Los Angeles court tomorrow for the continuing battle over custody of her children.

A friend described her wedding plan as “hare-brained”, adding: “Brit blew a fuse again when she was told it would be an act of insanity to marry. Having a Scientology wedding is her way of giving her family a one-finger salute.”

Scientologists – its celebrity members include Tom Cruise and John Travolta – believe humans are descended from space aliens.

Spears’s latest bombshell comes a week after she was admitted to hospital following a three-hour stand-off with police and paramedics when she refused to hand back her children to ex-husband Kevin Federline, known as K-Fed.

A relative of Federline said yesterday: “K-Fed is used to Britney’s bizarre behaviour but even he is lost for words. Doesn’t she realise she is ruining her chances of sharing custody of her children?”

Spears’s friend, a former aide to the singer, said: “The Scientology stuff may seem ludicrous but it’s her idea of revenge over the Dr Phil fiasco.”

This is a reference to the arrival of TV psychiatrist Dr Phil McGraw at the mental unit Britney was taken to at the Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

Dr Phil said he had been asked to intervene by Britney’s mother Lynne and sister Jamie but the singer “went ballistic”, according to witnesses, and told the television doctor to go away.

The friend added: “She’s been to Sunday brunches at the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Hollywood but she’s not really a member.”

Last night a church spokesman said it would be happy to provide a minister for the wedding.

She could be jailed for contempt tomorrow however. Last week a judge awarded sole custody of Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one, to Federline. If Spears is not jailed she may have to go into rehab.
