Spotted Lantern Fly!!
Today before I left for work I was chillin out on the front porch with my man, watching the hummingbirds come and go.

All of a sudden a lovely .. big - very big ... speckled bug landed on my arm and looked me right in the face.

I don't kill bugs outside ever. Even inside, I try to usher them out without incident.

Oh how adorable this guy is - he likes me! Hi little dude ... look at your little red eyes! Hello! It's ok you are safe ...

OMG! It's a Spotted lantern fly I said ...

"Well, you have a dilemma there hon," he said.

THWACK

He killed it with his flip flop midway through the realization ...

right there on my arm.

That was my first encounter with the infamous, dreaded spotted lantern fly ... condemned to be killed on sight here in NJ.

Now I have to keep my eye out for eggs and eradicate them, too. Not looking forward to it. Anyone else have these?

not me, I moved. but they are a big thing in Delaware.

a friend is considering having her maple tree cut down because the damage they do is so bad to maples.

ailanthus, tree of heaven, is their favorite, but peach and maple trees are favorites too.

I can't stand the tree of heaven - that's Chinese, too! Just like the lantern fly.

It should be called "big ugly weed" lol.

This is - I think - Year 2 of the warnings but the first encounter I've had in Southern NJ. Not far from Delaware.

I reported it, thanks! I washed it off my arm before I took a pic, but it was one.

They look like drawings of the mothman with those red eyes!

About a month ago, I noticed TONS of assassin bugs ... evidently the assassin bugs like to kill the SLF.

We had them a few years ago right before Covid but luckily not many at all this year. Maybe saw 3 at most but i am in eastern PA near the Lehigh Valley.

Reading PA was really bad back in 2019

How sad.

They’re curious about us - all bugs and flying insects come around to check us out when we go outside.

What if this is just another vector of attack on the US?

Do they destroy food crops?
