Because we don’t have that now, and haven’t for a couple of years. At least 2 versions of reality are getting more polarized.

I don’t see our society coming back to a consensus without dramatic intervention.

Can society function with this widening gap and no intervention? I am thinking it won’t.

The Atlantic article explores this, but shows it’s extreme bias by saying It’s all Trump’s fault that our consensus reality is now fractured.

There is no acknowledgement that people no longer accept as authority what they now know are corrupt and compromised institutions.

For instance, if you or your political family made income off the side from China or other country, you are now in their pocket and don’t have American interests in mind.

If you make mandates about medications that you hold stock in…..hmmm, might be compromised.

If you are a proponent of eugenics and on record or saying vaccines are a viable solution to the population problem…..hmmm, maybe you shouldn’t be the authority on vaccinating an entire planet with a brand new technology of vaccine.

If you ignore major political protests across the globe but cover stories that fit the larger narrative to the benefit of big tech, big pharma, etc…..maybe you are in fact “fake news”.

I don’t think “they” can get away with blaming the fractured consensual reality on Trump as much as they are trying.

It’s at a breaking point.

Re: Is “consensus reality” a requirement for a functioning society?
The problem with consensus reality is all the “experts” have been dethroned in the court of public opinion. Like the PR schools say, it matters not what is true but “perception is reality”. The “experts” have all been “fired”; like it or not.

Blaming it all on one person is not going to solve the problem, nor convince anyone, and will in fact pour gasoline onto an already raging fire.
