Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80176568 This thing is NOT slowing down...it's getting worse. Yes I see it....just like that secondary opened yesterday and ate the main vent overnight....it's seeping even lower now. Eesh. Thinking on it, if the main was open and punched a hole through, then the secondary opened at a lower area...and now a third is chewing at the bottom of that...is this entire chunk one giant gaping hole under the cone debris from all the melt/harmonics? How wide, from top vent to bottom, would that even be? I'm picturing a crater the size of the old northern cone opening up. In this particular instance more vents are actually a good thing. The more vents we have the more gas and steam pressure are released vertically up and out of the wolcano, significantly reducing the probability of steam subduction under the western flank fault. In other words, less steam pressure equals less chance the slippage will happen, equals less chance of a cataclysmic meg-tsunami. |

If a vent opens up on top of the ridge I think a major landslide is inevitable... Those are very telltale stress patterns running through the first 40% of the Doomsday ridge in question. From my aerospace engineering background this does not look good. From the beginning of all this I have been aware of the tsunami analysis papers for over a decade and until I saw this deformation imagery I was in the "possible but not probable" camp but better keep an eye on it anyway. I would like to change my vote now. ![]() You only hear about SpecOps when they go wrong. |

Time to say goodbye for volcano-thank you for all support :) So the physics of transmitted particle energy may not necessarily translate into a killer-sized wave of water from coastline to coastline. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77138015 It's only a question of the movement direction. If the plate moves horizontally, then no or only a small tsunami is triggered. But if parts of a breaking plate are moving up or down, then this will trigger for sure a large tsunami. If this happens at the atlantic ground, a vertical movement of a large mass, then goodnight. Is it possible, what if there's a big enough shift or a jolt, that the entire chunk doesn't slide off, but rather drops a couple dozen feet like it did before in one big thud from the weight of tons of new lava/land added to the already cracking fracture lines. It would still "be attached" but enough of a drop to displace the seafloor outward? Would that do it? I have a strong suspicion that we will see a number of new vents open until it gets to the point it will start crumbling down. Sells powdered water in the Gobi |

Time to say goodbye for volcano-thank you for all support :) Krakatoa was a huge volcanic blast in the 1880s, so powerful its sound was reportedly heard around the world. It did cause a tsunami, but apparently a large wave that didn't extend much beyond its part of the Pacific. So the physics of transmitted particle energy may not necessarily translate into a killer-sized wave of water from coastline to coastline. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77138015 I'm skeptical that Cumbre Vieja will be all that different. But I set the science against the backdrop of precogs or psychics, some of whom have seen a lot of wave action around September. Legititmate psychics may represent another part of science, the one of quantum physics. So commonly accepted science suggests that when it comes to tsunamis, the Canary Islands are no BFD. But certain precogs do make me wonder. A swiss lab did a tsunami wave height and propagation study using the size and weight of the wedge provided by intricate geological studies of the fault. That study proved the tsunami would be in excess of 650 meters in height traveling at 700mph by the time it reached the eastern coast of the North American Continent and would travel inland 50+ miles. Well our East Coast is a very dark evil, corrupt place, very horrible HISTORY , and we got DC and NYC. If a very large area is rising or diving, then a few feet are enough to trigger a large tsunami. It's the whole water volume above the moved part. That means for 11000 meters deep, several cubic kilometers water will be moved. |
