Canary Islands Update:

Sequence continues South of La Palma, Canary Islands. The last 5 hours since update 16:
- 70 below M2.5
- 9 above M2.5
- 1 above M3.0
- 13 backlog
- 93 total earthquakes

Total now up to 755 quakes so far in this sequence.
 Quoting: Economic Prepper

Actually there have been almost 3,000 quakes over the last 4 days alone.

Also, just found this addt'l info and it's not good news;

[link to www.volcanodiscovery.com (secure)]

La Palma volcano (Canary Islands): likelihood of new volcanic eruption increases

The volcanic-seismic crisis continues to evolve. During the past 24 hours, earthquakes have been moving westwards and become shallower, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported.
This is likely reflecting continued magma intrusion and migration under the surface, supported also by continued deformation of the surface in the same area as the quakes

NONE of this is good news folks...sorry
 Quoting: FeedYourHead

Wake up drinking coffee, the thread is 32 pages long.

Finish morning stuff/reading at 36.

It is closer to 3000 quakes.

Some anti-DOOM news is this: Tazacorte is running east west of the volcano, and it is showing activity. So it's more likely the southwest side of the island to break off, not a full split.

Morning DOOM'ers glad to see I didn't miss too much. Only fifty+ quakes...

People need to keep in mind that with Mount St. Helens it was rumbling for several weeks before one strong quake dislodged the side of the mountain and it blew out sideways.

Similar historical reports exist for both Krakatoa and Tambora in what is now Indonesia (Tambora believed to be the largest reuption in the last 2000 or so years).

Ditto for Mt. Pinatubo in the Phillipeans, which is the largest or second largest eruption since Tambora.

In other words do NOT expect a MAJOR event IMMEDIATELY on LaPalma. It needs to fester and build up a "head of steam" so to speak before it will do anything serious.

How long?

Based on history I would say a minimum of 2 weeks to 3 weeks, if Tambora and Pinatubo are any indication 6 to 8 weeks.

===============================================

It would be nice to know if Geologists have determined if the Island of LaPalma IS CRACKED all the way across, like the big island of Hawaii is, ... which would facilitate an entire portion of the island splitting off and falling into the sea. Maybe somebody can chime in with that research.
 Quoting: Midwest Skeptic

Good info.

Like Mt St Helens--something to keep on the radar and have an eye out for possibly into the longer-short term.
 Quoting: LaGata

I'd say look on the main El Hiero thread from some years ago but it is gone. If it collapses you have roughly 8 hours to get off the east coast before the tsunami hits. Anywhere from 300 ft- to 800 feet plus depending on how many millions of tonnage of rock collapses. Do not depend on the tv to tell you! They do not want us to know.

If it goes, for those on the coast and inward, fill your bathtubs, fill the car, just in case it's a nothing-burger, but manages to take water & gas out for a few. Move escape tools to the attic for a possible bust out, and don't forget some foodstuffs.

Now, though, search for the highest point in your state or inland state for places to camp, just in case. If it goes, make reservations on the spot.

Pack car and prepare to leave with gas and water, then bugout bag, clothing, more food, fire, shelter. Move what you can up to the attic. Maybe the building will survive tsunami and flood havoc.

Should it lose strength, but still be on the way, move tools to your attic to escape, fill bathtub, expect flooding, start making and freezing extra ice, buy ice now.

Your basing this on the Ward-Day 2001 model. Later studies showed minimal tidal effect along east coast even in a worse case scenario.

Here's the statement that sums it up for those who need a little doom relief:

"A change (reduction) in any of these parameters would yield a much smaller tsunami. For example, subsequent work (Abadie et al. 2012) has taken the ““credible worst case scenario” (derived using slope stability analysis), to have a volume of 80 cubic kilometres (but note the factor of safety of the slope was found to be considerably higher than one, indicating that the slope is not particularly unstable).

Modelling of the tsunami generated by such a landslide, using a more refined tsunami simulation, does generate a very significant wave close to La Palma. This wave would be significant as it crossed the continental shelf off the east coast of North America, but would lose a great deal of energy due to frictional effects in this region. Thus, for a 80 cubic kilometre “credible worst case scenario” flank collapse on La Palma, wave heights on the east coast of the USA were found by Tehranirad et al. (2015) to be less than 2 metres along the coastline.

This is not the disastrous scenario that the newspapers have so enjoyed featuring."

It's moved from an average of 10km underground to an average of 8km underground in just about 24 hours.

Unless it speeds up, it could easily be another 4 days.

The question is will it find a way to release pressure, like a pre-existing tube, or will it be punching straight through solid rock the whole way.

I'm suspicious we may get a new cone north-north-west of the main one.

That would take 4 days.

GREAT Information here-

"Quote" But for U. S. mid-Atlantic communities there is the possibility for surprise tsunamis that may be generated locally and without warning. As presented at the beginning of this article, sediments along the outer continental margin are so soggy and gas charged that they can slump spontaneously. Marine geologists identified fresh slump scars last year off New Jersey, and Driscoll, and others, recently found a 25-mile-long system of cracks along the shelf edge off southern Virginia. These cracks lie just north of the approximately 16,000-year-old (Albemarle) submarine landslide."
