Take a look at the 3D model.

In order for it to become yellowstone sized, it would need to see activity in the other islands. There is activity in them, but it has remained relatively consistent and stable, so I don't see anything besides the main islands.
 Quoting: Glaxnor

OK. But what is with this:
[link to www.cabarrus.k12.nc.us (secure)]

Quote: "Since most of the underplated material is inferred to consist of cumulate rocks being intimately mixed and juxtaposed with the lower oceanic crust and having similar densities, it is probably impossible to detect such an underplating zone seismically."

I'm not an expert, but this sounds like it's not clear how the underground structure really is.

link shared earlier, not sure if it helps the convo.

A hot spot under the Canary Islands feeds the La Palma volcano and will create new islands

Good catch, kiddo!

Here is a quick reference as well from National Geographic.
[link to www.nationalgeographic.org (secure)]

There is confusion about traditional volcanoes (such as
are on the West coast of the u.S.A. at the plate boundaries)
versus "hot spots" which can be many miles away from the
grinding action of the plates. Both Yellowstone and the
Hawaiian islands are "hot spots" and NOT traditional
plate boundary volcanoes. I would think La Palma's are
also caused by the "hot spot" cause and not from plate
boundaries. That is a big difference when giving consideration
to man-made manipulation. To manipulate a "hot spot"
one would need technology that can influence much deeper
geologic forces than a plate boundary.

thank you :) will check that out!

As I see it, this describes the action of a so called "Mantleplume".

But what is with this possibly undetectable "underplating zone"?

Sadly, though, I really don't think there is ANY LOGICAL
WAY to predict--based on what is known about either of
these geologic mechanisms--to "second guess" what could
happen at La Palma. I wish there were a way...as there
are many innocent souls at risk. Maybe if humanity had
poured all their resources into understanding the EARTH
(and the human mind) instead of WAR...we would know more.

So often do I think of what great things could have been done to better humanity and this world if only all the advanced technologies were used for good.

The utter greed of the vile few have always stolen it.

I just can't imagine living on an island like this. It's quite evident the surface is riddled with previous vents from volcanic activity all over the island.

local weather report says possibility of afternoon showers.

has it rained yet since this erupted? i wonder how that will react with the vents and active lava fields

Here's a National Geographic special from 2005 about LaPalma. I muted the sound since the whole episode is in Spanish, but got the gist of it by just watching. Video caught my eye since it revolved around Prof's Day, Ward and others. Also has some wild simulations.

Sounds like there are two chambers, the upper one with old lava which gets the pressure from lower fresh lava. But they said millions of eruptions were needed to build up the island.

This sounds not plausible to me, looks more like fitting. Millions of eruptions would mean billions of years, while the continents of Earth moved around. Not plausible.

Spectacular, locally catastrophic but we are still looking at A VENT only. This is NOT a "volcano" - yet. The EQ's certainly seem to indicate it MAY be one soon but enjoy the side show and FFS quit acting like this is Yellowstone or Toba erupting. Geeez.

While I'm here consider an alternate scenario.

There are several 7.++ EQ's and suddenly ALL the live feed cameras go down.

BOOOM SILENCE. No words. No video. NO live feed. Everything is off line. We are ALL expecting the lower SOUTH WEST quarter of the island, under the right circumstances, to sheer off and drop 17,000 ft into the Atlantic abyss.

Minutes pass ... Suddenly BBB comes on a live feed looking typically FREEEEKED out and horrified but this time he really is!! He announces the bottom SOUTH WEST quarter of the island is INTACT but ... but the rest of LaPalma just sheared off and dropped into the Atlantic.

Instead of a 500 to 600 CUBIC MILE LANDSLIDE ( expected if it was the S. W. 1/4 of the island ) it's just under 2,000 cubic miles of tsunami causing rock slide / displacement.

Everybody!! QUICK!! RE-CALCULATE the size of the wave that hits western Europe and then the entire EAST coast of North and South America.
