Yes, I have done it. But you need enough body fat to make it 40 days. If you are lean 20 days may be all you can do before you start to break down muscle (autophagy will break down other cells and proteins first like cysts, damaged cells/scar tissue, fat etc).

Upated: did a 4 day dry fast but don't think I could have gone 5 since my voice was starting to go horse.

You should take it day by day. After the first 3 days you'll start to get energy you didn't think would be possible (first 3 days can be a little hard). However, if you have a child to watch I'd have someone help to watch them and you if possible. I only had my wife but I had no issues with energy. Always good to have someone around to keep an eye out.

You should be drinking close to a gallon of water a day to keep hydrated. Adding salts can be done but i did just distilled water. Check out the Snake Diet guy on youtube. He has a mouth but it's all an act.

When you start to get hungry again it's time to start to slowly introduce soft foods (watermelon, soup, light salads over a 2 to 3 week period).
