I would advice that you move to the Prosper Texas area or north. It's a big sparse now but growing and will be basically North Dallas in 10 years. Dallas and Ft Worth are both liberal in the interior and not in the exterior burbs and towns.

Go to one of the smaller towns around that area.

Cheaper on rent or leasing a building but still close enough to the main cities.

Also the crime rates within Raleigh and Durham are up bad.

Smaller communities within 30-50 miles are much safer.

But one problem with NC. Finding a home for sale is scarce unless you are willing to pay big bucks. I wouldn’t advise an apartment unless you want to live with lots of thugs.

Just north of the city of Charlotte is an area referred to as the Lake Norman
area with homes and condos on the lake with other nice residential neighborhoods
with decent wooded lots and not so overbuilt. We still call it being "out in the country."

Lake Norman is one of the largest manmade lakes in the country. Lots of boaters and water activities.

You can boat up to a couple restaurants on a Sunday afternoon.

Charlotte is a major banking center and you can get there in 25 to 45 minutes by interstate.

There are still areas of farmland with horses that have been here forever. It's pretty country.

You have the sophistication and entertainment offered by the cities, the mountains to the west, and a couple hour drive to the coastal beaches.

Our weather has four mild seasons people enjoy, and where I am it snowed one day last year and was gone by the following morning.

People, for the most part, are friendly, helpful and laid back.

The major areas of Texas are bursting at the seams. Roads are completely clogged and crime is rising exponentially. Not bad if you go to smaller towns but even those are getting full and prices rising because everyone is escaping outside the cities and suburbs. Roads are completely jammed with Trucks. So many companies have moved warehouses here, and every major artery is jammed with trucks and many are dangerous and don't know how to drive.

Also, the rest of the states do not want dumb people. I had family in CA in all of the 1980's and 1990's. Even in the late 80's, I could see things were not right there. Probably the most beautiful country in that state with the best weather but... the people. Holy crap.
