Is it just me, or does this seem deeply symbolic for the state of the nation?

People in Bootle, Merseyside were shocked when they saw the wild animal roaming about on Sunday morning.

The RSPCA said it had advised police to "leave the deer as it would make its own way back home" eventually.

But Merseyside Police said officers decided to euthanise the deer after growing concerns it might be dangerous for motorists and pedestrians.

The White Stag:

The white stag in Celtic myth is an indicator that the Otherworld is near. It appears when one is transgressing a taboo--such as when Pwyll tresspassed into Arawn's hunting grounds, or when Peredur entered the Castle of Wonders in his second adventure at the house of the Lame King. It also appears as an impetus to quest--the white stag or hart often appears in the forests around King Arthur's court, sending the knights off on to adventure against gods and fairies. (C. S. Lewis uses this device at both the beginning and end of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.)

To Christians, the white stag came to symbolize Christ, perhaps in part inspired by the St. Eustace legend, wherein the Roman soldier Eustace is hunting, and happens upon a deer with a cross between his antlers. Eustace converts on the spot, and is put through numerous tragedies, persecutions, etc., including the death of his family, until being miraculously reunited with them. However, it is clear that this pious legend has pagan predecessors.

It is also worth noting that in Christian iconography, the unicorn is a symbol for Christ. There is a close identification between the white stag and the unicorn, and it can be reasoned that the white stag is the equivalent of the unicorn in these northern cultures, which do not record the existence of unicorns.

The legend of the white stag of Edinburgh:

A King's encounter with a mystical white stag in an Edinburgh forest 900 years ago has left a rich legend and legacy that still endures today.

At the top of Canongate Church lies a gilded stag’s head with a cross between its antlers. This symbolises links with royalty going back to the time of King David I who ruled Scotland between 1124 and 1153.

The story is that in 1128 King David went hunting in what is now Holyrood Park which then would have been wild and heavily wooded countryside. He became separated from his companions and was confronted by a large white stag which unhorsed him and seemed likely to kill him. The King seized the stag’s antlers and miraculously they turned into a cross, which he was left holding as the stag ran off. That night he dreamt that a great religious house would be established on the site of his escape.

 Quoting: Mercy Side Fo Life

But, I mean, cops are more dangerous for motorists and pedestrians than a white stag.

Fury as police sniper kills rare white stag roaming town streets: Uproar over shooting after RSPCA officers said the animal would 'make its own way back home'

* Police sniper shot dead a majestic white stag in Bootle, Merseyside on Sunday

* The animal strayed from the countryside and ran terrified through the streets

* Killing of rare stag sparked uproar among Liverpudlians who reacted with fury

Legend has it that anyone who kills a white stag will be cursed for life.

But police on Merseyside are clearly untroubled by folklore.

Hi new Jake! No real poster in the history of GLP has gotten more green from pinned threads than real, actual, user votes!

Just saying.

Now, let's see if I get two red for calling out the obvious, or if I have to move on to Shamrock0000007. Because let me tell you what. Big Daddy GLP doesn't like me calling out the obvious. Especially when I fucked up all their sock puppet accounts by pointing out they all had 10x more green from thread reports than user votes.

People aren't stupid.
