I felt it and immediately report to both USGS and GLP. Only the second I've felt in five years.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The United States Geological Survey said a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck south of Hawaii Island on Sunday.

There is no tsunami threat.

USGS said the quake occurred at 11:48 a.m., roughly 17 miles south-southeast of Naalehu.

People across Hawaii Island and as far away as Kauai felt the tremor. A USGS “Did You Feel It” map showed a few reports from the Garden Isle of weak to light shaking.

There were several reports of moderate to strong shaking in the South Kona and Kau districts of Hawaii Island.

“I was standing out here watching everyone board and it felt like a ripple underneath my feet, and I felt it twice,” said Angela Reich, a Hawaii Airlines worker at the Kona International Airport.

Residents from Waikiki as well as in west Oahu also felt the quake.

Officials said the earthquake did not have an impact on the Kilauea eruption.

“Webcams and other data streams show no impact on the ongoing eruption at Kilauea except for a few minor rockfalls reported within Halemaumau crater,” said Ken Hon, Scientist-in-Charge at Hawaii Volcano Observatory.

Reports of damages are unknown at this time.

Didn't realize an EQ as large as that occurred the last time a lot of media attention was given to volcanic activity in Hawaii.

After I thought all the smoke and lava flows might lead to something way more dramatic, the story petered out fairly quickly.

some speculate that was part of the 2018 huge lava flow. the Rath kids had dug a huge buncer and created a geothermal co to harvest volcanic energy and sell it and make more billions. they were FRACKING the volcano (ya can't make this stuff up)
HUGE VOLCANIC EXPLOSION MAY 3RD 2018...many many houses, towns, property, jobs destroyed and but in the end, the lava COVERED the entrances to under gr. and much of the company built by the rath kids.

Strong shaking, with a maximum Intensity of VI, has been reported across the Island of Hawaii, and throughout the Hawaiian Islands. At that intensity, very slight damage to buildings or structures may have occurred. The USGS "Did you feel it?" service ( [link to earthquake.usgs.gov] received over 1,300 felt reports within one hour of the earthquake.

I’m about 60 miles from the epicenter. It started slow and ramped up to a twisting, vibrating motion for about 30 seconds.

A lot of rain last couple of days.. I’ve observed massive rainfall corresponding with increased volcanic activity. Just IMHO.

Not a big deal, just normal lava moving out Lo’ihi way.

That wasn’t gibberish. I understand all of it no problem. Perhaps you are unaware of everything that went on during the 2018 eruption, the thermal plant, who owns it, their fracking etc..

Imagine if you will, 35km crustal displacement...

I sure remember. That kept us on edge for some time just watching you go through it. I kept planting more and more potatoes to relieve stress and for emergency food supply. I still have over abundance to this day as a constant reminder. : )

My parents are on the big island - the quake was just off the coast from them. I talked to my mom and she said it was pretty scary. They lived in Southern California all their lives before moving, so they know what earthquakes are like.
