Some article I can't take the time to dig up now said that the Chinese initiated the practice of using ventilators to keep the exhalatons of covid patients from entering the air in the room, not as a therapeutic device. I've also seen mentioned that ventilators can be a vector for passing on diseases to other patients strapped into them, let alone do they even work, or are they a mechanical version of Big Pharma.
