Lotus Feet User ID: 299977 United Kingdom 01/25/2008 06:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | When you realize we tend to think in words and language for the most part and then realize that the connections between words and phrases are for the most part defined by a very few people (think who controls Webster´s dictionary), you can see how just a few people can actually control the thinking of a vast amount of people. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 361653And not only that, but this thinking eventually hard wires our brain to create connections that utiliye this type of thinking the best. Therefore, people who control our language are really creating the mind from a hardware sense. In order for us to break out of this "mold" that has been created for us, we need to be able to break away from just the standard definitions and realationships between words and phrases that are defined for us. As we are able to relate more and more words and phrases to each other, this will necessarily increase the amount of connections (in the form of synapses or other) and will greatly increase our cognitive abilities. Every several seconds the TV implants a new meme in your brain. Commercials are the most obvious and blatant meme transfer agents, but we've all picked up god knows how many memes from the news, sitcoms, movies, etc. These memes, or units of information, swim through your subconscious and attach to other memes, overwrite others, form contradictions and do many other things. If you are one of the few who are capable of objective self observation and analysis, you may begin to realize just how much of "you" is made up of assorted pop culture memes. |

Sky441 User ID: 318977 United States 01/25/2008 09:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We often think in cliches, thus we use definitions with empty meanings. For example, "I'm sorry for you loss," or "that is a beautiful tree." People go through life stringing these empty epithets together and think that they are actually expressing themselves through them, but the reality is that people are dead inside from speaking words based on definitions that they have not discovered for themselves. This is why the person who asks "Why?" is usually a huge nuisance - because they expose empty definitions for what we have accepted and allowed them to be, empty and meaningless to ourselves. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 361706 Slovakia 01/25/2008 09:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I disagree entirely. Words only define how we EXPRESS what we think but not HOW we think. This is why many times people are unable to express in words what they know and understand. They know what they want to say but don't know how to say. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 361724As a challenge, I ask you to try to think without words. Try to think about this subject using processes other than language and see how you do. And as a further challenge, try to express these thoughts to us here without using words. It is possible, but difficult would be a monumental understatement for how hard it is to do. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 361706It is easy to think without words...not the least bit difficult as you seem to be convinced. Just think in pictures/images. For example: A dog race between a greyhound and a dachsund. You can easily comprehend in images that the greyhound will cross the finish line first. No need to actually verbalize the thought at all. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 361740 Slovakia 01/25/2008 10:19 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | yes, one can visualize a dog race and post a video of one to communicate. But that is fairly simple thinking. Abstract ideas are much more difficult (at least for me, maybe not some artists) to visualize and communicate. I would say that is why are dreams are very difficult to comprehend... they are often visualizations of very abstract thoughts. |

Practice thinking in images and it will become as easy as thinking in words. Most people are just much more practiced in thinking in words. Point is: Thinking is not defined nor limited by words. |

Thread: If you are a CONSPIRACY THEORIST, your mind is working more EFFICIENTLY Also, you still haven´t shown me that you can visualize something as abstract as this topic and convey it to us using other techniques other than language. I guess a good way to do it would be to find a painting or a musical piece that would generate the feeling you get when you think about the topic and hope that others interpret the art the same way. In that way symbols or sounds are being exchanged for words...and symbols generally have much more abstract meanings than words so we can say that art as a form of communication is perhaps a better medium for many ideas. |

The only reason we cannot convey in images/symbols a thread such as this one is because such a language has not been developed. If our language had been developed using symbols instead of words, we probably could communicate just as efficiently, or perhaps even more so, with images than with words. If you had practiced thinking in in symbols all of your life, instead of in words, you would probably find it as difficult to convey any ideas in words as you presently find it difficult to convey thoughts in symbols. It's just that people are more accustomed with words than symbolic thinking. My point is that, although it is more familiar for many people to communicate and think in words, this does not mean that thinking is defined by words nor even limited by them. |
Hold the Phone User ID: 330765 United States 01/25/2008 12:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | From Richard Mitchell's "Less Than Words Can Say": "Words never fail. We hear them, we read them; they enter into the mind and become part of us for as long as we shall live. Who speaks reason to his fellow men bestows it upon them. Who mouths inanity disorders thought for all who listen. There must be some minimum allowable dose of inanity beyond which the mind cannot remain reasonable. Irrationality, like buried chemical waste, sooner or later must seep into all the tissues of thought." |

* <----star of destiny User ID: 279402 United States 01/25/2008 12:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It doesnt matter what books say words mean ..well it does matter but to only a degree ...we are still born and live with instinct and a self determining mind and soul/spirit that guides us to truth. Even if some dark forces played with the definitions of words in the long run wouldnt mater. Because when you hit a moment when truth is absolutely required then all our internal systems MUST guide us to the truth or we will lose our minds and go insane and kill one another. So in life there is truth in the words and in self destruction and chaos there is none. In a time of great decision (which we are in now) there is no way around the truth if we fight the truth and try to find a way around the truth (if we fight what our soul wants) then we kill ourselves. End of story : ) have a nice day : ) P.S- have you noticed how the smallest one syllable words have the greatest and largest meaning ? Soul, God, Spirit, truth, love, peace...etc. Wonderful irony isnt it ...small words big meanings. Man's symbiotic connection with the cosmos will be known and there is nothing which can stop that knowing. Because everything we all do everyday helps confirm that truth. It is just that we haven't reached the pinnacle of where it leads. But we will soon enough. We will either live or die with that knowledge. Between Heaven and Earth is us. Be brave young warriors in truth. [link to www.youtube.com] Only a miracle will save us now. All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident. Arthur Schopenhauer German philosopher (1788 - 1860) |
