They are not your children. You sold them when you accepted their birth certificate.

If the parents fully owned them they could just kill them if they wanted, or abuse them in any way they wanted. Think back to the cave man, do you think they sat back and watched someone severely abuse a little kid? I bet heads got caved in over it.
