What would Really Happen if New York Was Hit by Tsunami from La Palma?
What would happen if New York City was struck by a La Palma mega tsunami?

Would 100 m waves roll into Manhattan as those TV movies and CGI animations suggest?

This physics based computer simulation shows the effects of a 20 m wave arriving there from the Southeast.

Here is one of the other original contributors to the research on the La Palma Situation models, that are used as part of his teaching, and have gone to peer review with some saying they are to big and some saying to small, showing the metres height at coast at all points in the USA.

[link to websites.pmc.ucsc.edu (secure)]

A colleague of his commented on the above embedded You Tube Video which is very sobering:

The Actual Original Computer Model as used in the Documentary and caused the initial alarm is on Dr Wards You tube page here:

And for the lecture notes and a wealth of other Tsunami Simulations, Volcano Collapses, the Med being formed after breaking through the "pillars of Hercules" or Gibraltar, Meteor Impacts, Moses event and parting the waves...

Much here from one of the best at the world at modelling and knowing about fluid dynamics, earthquakes ect. all as taught at Doctorate level still and now.

Here: [link to websites.pmc.ucsc.edu (secure)]

If such an event does happen below is the most accurate in the worse case scenario, of time from landslide, and very detailed wave height at coast of the USA.

Added this so is not lost in the Other Threads, and more of a resource to, the horses mouth, and of interest for the other tsunami topics etc. he covers.

Dr Ward is overlooked against Day and McGuire, but he was the one who did the actual number crunching, modelling and knows about this inside out.

Of Course here are the main GLP Thread for the actual eruption etc.:

With kind respect to the loss of life and devastation too the East coast...

Worst case scenario devastates the entire USA... Economic collapse, maybe multiple nuke plants melt down, the eastern electrical grid could collapse all the way to the middle of the country

Indeed like in Japan, and nearly all the nuke plants are by the sea, really scary prospect.

If you look at the simulation I linked not the video all of Africa, most of America a lot of Europe and Ireland and Britain, large parts of south america, well if you are close to the Sea It's game over and devastation for most, if within a mile of the sea.

Like the boxing day Tsunami but in a massive worldwide coastlines

50 metres in europe and Ireland, the carribean would be gone the islands etc...

And it is a Conseravtive model, as his video of actual new york, rebuking somewhat any of the more extreme ends of the scale ones.

Sobering.

That's for sure, a new lif cycle and new world as wlel it would change everything if not imediately over the following decade in ways like Covid we could not imagine.

Indeed especially if sleeping, the non extreme bad modelling is still not good it seems around washington between 3 metres to 26 metres at the shore, certainly Norfolk would be bad delaware etc up to maybe 50 Odd Metres.

Maybe Actual washington might be protected by the wave break Norfolf and Delaware itself being between "Washington" and the Atlantic, though also maybe much water would funnel up Cheapsake Bay and the Potomac.

If the worst case or up to those types of massive waves did happen, for example the Land slide feared, which also happened during an eruption not just by quakes and expanding water and steam in the island, and then a secondary Krakatoa type event wehre the sea would then rush back in and directly into onto the Magma pool below, as the Land covering it slipped into the ocean, there would then be a second massive Tsunami Createing event of massive expansion of sea to steam instantly, and explosion.

Ive not seen that mentioned in any of the models or theorised, and wondered myself that even though the worse end of the models re just Displacement of water due to the Landslide would not create the 1000ft waves, the above the landslide uncovering totally the upper Magma chambers and the Sea coming back onto it, would certainly do that, and probably much worse than already at the extreme ends of the Models.

From what I can tell, at the realistic levels and most likely wave heights of a full flank collapse, in one fairly big go ie quickly and along the entire flank ridge nearly all people within at least 3 KM of any shoreline in the USA, Europe outside the Med Africa and South America would be greatly affected.

It would be like the Boxing Day Tsunami but along all the coasts of East North and South America, Britain Ireland Portugal and Western Africa.

Totally catastrophic as so many live close to the Sea and most big cities are there.

Unless as I said a double wammy happened, it seems the 1000ft waves etc are very unlikely, and the idea of 10-20 miles inshore being destroyed is not realistic. But for those close to the shore, it would be catastropic especially at heights of 20 metres or so, I wouldnt want to be in Florida or the Bahamas or Carribean thats for sure.

If you look here

You get a really good handle on Metres waves height and time to them for where you ask, and elsewhere.

Naturally occurring doom is way better than political doom any day.

Well it makes all "man made" and "first world problems" etc seem insignifant in comparison eh, Nature does these things and they make humanity seem like ant's to us, in comparison to the sudden massive energy and destructive forces that happen on an unpredicatble but fairly consistent time line in earths history.

In short, if NY was hit by a tsunami, it would turn red!
 Quoting: TheFeistyCadavar

Well I think there might a lot of glowing things, I always since this started have been concerned at what happened in Japan and the Nuclear reactor, something of this size could take out a few, and with the already Bad and underfunded Electrical Grids in Britain the Us etc some things certainly might start glowing.

Lets all hope it does not happen for another few thousand years etc, and hopefully the info and links here are useful for some.

On the Main Thread's something is disturbing as the actual cause of the landslide, water expanding superheated to push the flank away that is already happening, seems more likely as water has been observed due to the type of the eruption being mixed with the Magma see Here:

When an aircraft carrier fires all boilers and goes at flank speed, does the backwash of the propellers propagate for hundreds of miles?
10 miles?
1?
300 yards? Why not a thousand miles?

Why should a disturbance from a postage stamp island 4400 miles off our coast lay waste to over a thousand miles of our coastal areas?

If the rock slides down the mountain to the sea, and it takes time to cover the several miles to the beach, and it's all sliding in progressively and not with a kerplunk!, how would the wave develop near supersonic speeds through the water (again with little loss of kinetic energy along the way) and slam into the distant coasts hours later full of force?

I think these scientists need to study a globe and get back to us. Maybe drop some big rocks in Lake Michigan, too.

Oh they have

And this is how some of the extreme ends of wave heights originally stated, as work done like below in Norway if I remember correctly or sweden came out.

Further modelling including computer ones and taking the low end of observed results from the rael world, including what has happened in actual events, in the real world such as the alaska tsunami in the Bay and other Landlsides, as linked in my opening post brings the wave heights to the short movie clip I have linked on the coasts.

I've not seen any top-notch psychics with good track records so far sensing major doom around about now on the East Coast. They're as good as any when it comes to disaster-movie-type predictions.

BTW, sediment along the Hudson River indicates some major flooding from a huge wave occurred centuries ago. But researchers aren't sure if that was caused by a meteorite or earthquake in the Atlantic.

Yes, thank you for repeating the current science used to perpetuate as much fear in populations as possible.
We all know the computer models spit out these results when computers are only as smart as their programmers.

I don't believe a tiny spit of rock (in comparison to thousands of miles of coast) can create a tsunami that big, that can move at jet airliner speeds when the speed of the falling rock is a tiny fraction of that velocity. And maintain all its power 4400 miles later.

To even create a tsunami of any proportions the rock has to be dropped into the sea all at once and this landslide will take time. How much time?

I don't think so, and I have no love for NYC.
If La Palma crumbles their might be some small tsunami here or very high tide. Nothing to get bent about.
