I Live alone and have no friends - Thanksgiving Style

I am so isolated, I can't tell if this is mockery or not.

I know Bob Evans mashed potatoes are a dim replica of some actual fine home made potatoes....

but I lack the skill and knowledge to create real mashed potatoes, and since the mashed potato is not my favorite part of the meal, I have to settle for the frozen microwaved version smothered in gravy (which I will make from scratch..or at least try to).

But I'm sure having dinner with your mom beats having dinner alone. I hope you appreciate it. My mom has passed on I would give everything I own to have thanksgiving dinner with her one more time.

I have a friend that says this. He is pretty much like me, but his ex-girlfriend still invites him to her house every year. he goes but doesn't enjoy it much for the reasons you say.

This makes me feel bad for you OP. You don't lack skills, you lack the motivation. I'm a pathetic piece of shit that lives alone in a camper in the middle of nowhere, but I have youtube, which means I can do anything.

Seriously though, you should start cooking. It's one of my favorite parts of the day. It's not hard at all.

Bob Evans is an excellent choice for your situation and they taste just like they should. Hope you enjoy them for the filler that they are. Most people cooking them are afraid to add enough butter. My brother passed away two years ago he was a chef. He would tell me to add the butter until you taste it. My guess is one pound of butter to five pounds of potatoes. Don't ask him for a recipe you never get it. Everything was by taste. He would tell you how to make it.


Lost my wife in March so it's the first one without her in 22 years. Should be a great time for all! Let's have fun the best way we can.

Family are just a horse's ass these days, you should count yourself lucky to live in peace and quiet.

You can speak to us lot so you are not alone or incommunicado.

If you have food and shelter you should be thankful, at least you are not dying in agony or being tortured like some unfortunate souls.

some advice...

1. I hope there were good times at some point in your life,
so indulge in reminiscence by playing the music of the
era, the food, the memories etc*
2. While you are still on this earth there is always
possibility that things can change for the better,
just as there was chance for the condition you find
yourself in currently
3. Can you get a rescue pet? you could save each other.
there's a lot to be said for a great pet vs. bad humans
We are lucky when they come into our lives!

*My fav music this time of year is the entire soundtrack
from the Carlie Brown Christmas Special … Vince Guaraldi
made masterpieces on that. Track 5 played in the evening
will bring you back to the evening snowfalls of childhood
and the excitement of a snow day, or a peaceful Christmas
Eve, whatever your perspective, its there

4. Don't watch Hallmark holiday movies, they will get you
even more depressed
5. Tolerate and enjoy "Its a Wonderful Life"
because it has a little dark in it too
6. If you want to go out there watch the Twilight Zone
Christmas episode "Night of the Meek"
7. Theres a great true movie of WW1 where there was an
impulsive truce between the troops on Christmas eve

This will be the 3rd year I won't be celebrating a holiday. I just can't bring myself to do it without my youngest daughter.

I keep telling my older 2 children maybe next year. They go to their friends or other family members house.

Each year it does get a little easier though. The first year I completely shut down. Last year I made her favorite homemade mac and cheese for work and shared it. This year I'll do the same again and I was just talking to my 2 cats and dog saying I think I'll make a chocolate pie. Another one of my daughters favorites.

Who knows maybe next year I'll be able to do the whole meal again.

My advice is do whatever feels right for you. It sounds like you'll have a lovely meal.

Why not invite your friend to have Thanksgiving dinner with you since he doesn't enjoy going to his ex girlfriend's house? Does he feel obligated to go?

My husband is away on work this Thanksgiving, so it's just the
3 children and I. We aren't really too interested in celebrating this year, so I am giving them the day off from homeschool and we are going to watch some movies and hang out on the couch together.

ive spent many a thanskgiving alone..

one of my best thanksgivings was having taking mushrooms and walking around a misty lake ...no one was around..

then i walked home as i was coming off the trip, ate a juice bloody steak, and drank wine...for the rest of the evening.

Last year a good friend,older guy big as a bear and strong as an ox.Ex co-worker and hunting fishing buddy goes to a mutual friend's for TG.The whole family got drunk and stupid started fighting in the garage.My buddy had to body slam 2 30 something drunk hot heads on the concrete.I think 4 people went to jail.My buddy and our friend left before the cops showed.The holidays can be a complete nightmare.
