A giant space rock demolished an ancient Middle Eastern city and everyone in it – possibly inspiring the Biblical story of Sodom

As the inhabitants of an ancient Middle Eastern city now called Tall el-Hammam went about their daily business one day about 3,600 years ago, they had no idea an unseen icy space rock was speeding toward them at about 38,000 mph (61,000 kph).

Flashing through the atmosphere, the rock exploded in a massive fireball about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) above the ground. The blast was around 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. The shocked city dwellers who stared at it were blinded instantly. Air temperatures rapidly rose above 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit (2,000 degrees Celsius). Clothing and wood immediately burst into flames. Swords, spears, mudbricks and pottery began to melt. Almost immediately, the entire city was on fire.

Some seconds later, a massive shockwave smashed into the city. Moving at about 740 mph (1,200 kph), it was more powerful than the worst tornado ever recorded. The deadly winds ripped through the city, demolishing every building. They sheared off the top 40 feet (12 m) of the 4-story palace and blew the jumbled debris into the next valley. None of the 8,000 people or any animals within the city survived – their bodies were torn apart and their bones blasted into small fragments.

3600 B.P.

That would place the destruction of "Sodom" a bit late, around 1580 B.C.

However, depending on which chronology we follow...

Quote:

A "Progenitor" chronology that placed Abraham's birth at Anno Mundi (AM) 1600 and the foundation of the Temple at AM 2800. Alfred Jepsen proposed this chronology on the basis of melding time periods in the Samaritan and Masoretic recensions.

[link to en.m.wikipedia.org (secure)]

That places the birth of Abraham only twelve hundred years before the foundation of the first temple and his call to enter Canaan seventy-three years later, one thousand one hundred and twenty seven years before the foundation of the first temple.

That temple was to have started in the fourth regional year of Solomon whose reign conventional historians place around 970-931 BC. So the temple would have been started around 966 BC.

Adding 1,127 years to 966 BC leaves us about 2,093 BC for Abraham's calling to Canaan which is supposed to take place around the same time as the destruction of Sodom.

This would place the destruction of "Sodom" about five hundred years earlier.

Could the bible have placed this more recent event into the more distant past?

Is the chronology of the OT kind of off?

The similarity between the location AND destruction of this city and the biblical Sodom seems uncanny.

Historical evidence of King Solomon other than the biblical accounts has been so minimal that some scholars have understood the period of his reign as a 'Dark Age' (Muhly 1998). The first-century Romano-J_wish scholar Josephus in Against Apion, citing Tyrian court records and Menander, gives a specific year during which King Hiram I of Tyre sent materials to Solomon for the construction of the Temple.[54] However, no material evidence indisputably of Solomon's reign has been found. Yigael Yadin's excavations at Hazor, Megiddo, Beit Shean and Gezer uncovered structures that he and others have argued date from Solomon's reign,[55] but others, such as Israel Finkelstein and Neil Silberman, argue that they should be dated to the Omride period, more than a century after Solomon.[30]

According to Finkelstein and Silberman, authors of The Bible Unearthed: Archaeology's New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin of Its Sacred Texts,[56] at the time of the kingdoms of David and Solomon, Jerusalem was populated by only a few hundred residents or less, which is insufficient for an empire stretching from the Euphrates to Eilath. According to The Bible Unearthed, archaeological evidence suggests that the kingdom of Israel at the time of Solomon was little more than a small city state, and so it is implausible that Solomon received tribute as large as 666 talents of gold per year. Although both Finkelstein and Silberman accept that David and Solomon were real inhabitants of J_dah about the 10th century BCE,[48] they claim that the earliest independent reference to the Kingdom of Israel is about 890 BCE, and for J_dah about 750 BCE. They suggest that because of religious prejudice, the authors of the Bible suppressed the achievements of the Omrides (whom the H_brew Bible describes as being polytheist), and instead pushed them back to a supposed golden age of J_daism and monotheists, and devotees of Yahweh. Some Biblical minimalists like Thomas L. Thompson go further, arguing that Jerusalem became a city and capable of being a state capital only in the mid-7th century.[57] Likewise, Finkelstein and others consider the claimed size of Solomon's temple implausible.

Further evidence that biblical dates might have been pushed back:

There is a general agreement that a ritual structure existed on the Temple Mount by the point of the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, however serious doubts remain in attributing it or its construction to Solomon, or any king roughly contemporaneous to his lifetime.[8] Scholars doubt the veracity of the Biblical account as no evidence for the existence of Solomon's Temple has been found and the Temple is not mentioned in extra-Biblical accounts.[9][10] Artifacts supposedly proving the existence of Solomon's Temple - an ivory pomegranate and a ninth century BCE stone tablet - have turned out to be fakes.[11] Many scholars believe that the inscription on a pottery shard known as Ostracon 18 written around 600 BCE references the Temple in Jerusalem.[12] If so, it would be the only extra-Biblical corroboration of the Temple found.

About 1550 BC both Tall al Hammamm and the rest of the Jordan Valley become devoid of occupation for hundreds of years:

The site was occupied in the Chalcolithic (c. 4300–3600 BCE), Early Bronze Age (c. 3600–2500 BCE), Intermediate Bronze Age (2500–1950 BCE), Middle Bronze Age (c. 1950–1550 BCE), Iron Age II–III (c. 980–332 BCE),[16] and Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad periods (163 BCE–750 CE).[17] Like most sites in the Jordan Valley, it was vacant in the Late Bronze Age (c. 1550–1200 BCE). Only some Late Bronze pottery was discovered in a tomb,[18] and a single freestanding LB2a structure in Field UA on the upper tall.[19] The "Late Bronze Gap" (first named by Flanagan at Tall Nimrin) of c. 550 years is not unique to Tall al-Hammam but characteristic of many of the sites in the Jordan valley (H_brew kikkār) region, including Tall Iktanu, Tall Kefrein (al-Kefrayn), Tall Nimrin,[20] Tall el-Musṭāḥ, Tall Bleibel (Bulaybil), etc.[21] The most substantial findings are from the Early Bronze Age, Intermediate Bronze Age, and Middle Bronze Age.[22]

No why?

Quote:

One remaining puzzle is why the city and over 100 other area settlements were abandoned for several centuries after this devastation. It may be that high levels of salt deposited during the impact event made it impossible to grow crops. We’re not certain yet, but we think the explosion may have vaporized or splashed toxic levels of Dead Sea salt water across the valley. Without crops, no one could live in the valley for up to 600 years, until the minimal rainfall in this desert-like climate washed the salt out of the fields.

This sounds more like an orbital air-burst HALE ordinance. Similar to the "Rods From God" weapon theory, but actually having an explosive payload, not just kinetic. There would have to be some serious volatile material in that "asteroid" to reach those temperatures and combust in such an explosive manner. The event description, if accurate, sounds more like weaponry from an advanced civilization than anything a mere asteroid could do.

I read the Bible which is some of our greatest historical accounts - all in one place. That said, not everything is documented in the Bible, so, when science has theories on what's taken place in our past, those are also considered.

I took note of these words, "Tall el-Hammam went about their daily business one day about 3,600 years ago.

It's entirely possible this took place at some point in time.

You know what's fascinating (rhetorical), the remains of the giants they have found all over the world.

Re: A giant space rock demolished an ancient Middle Eastern city and everyone in it – possibly inspiring the Biblical story of Sodom
Lets talk next level shit...

They (rich billionaires, industrialists, etc) arent just building rockets for fun, or exploration (in the pure sense), or fame...its for money, and materials.

There are space rocks spinning around out there made up of hundreds, and even thousands of Trillions of dollars worth of materials (gold, silver, etc).

So the logical conclusion can be made that the same tech that will let them harness, manipulate, and trap such asteroids...

Will give them the ability to turn them into meteors, and launch them with pinpoint accuracy at Earth targets.

This is a biblical power. We are currently living under the rule of another "biblical" power as we speak...thats not biblical at all, but man made, and incredibly dangerous...

Covid.

I believe its just the start. They have much more dangerous bioweapons available...they are just inherently too dangerous, and unpredictable.

Meanwhile, fitting an Asteroid with some boosters, and computing its trajectory and impact on Earth is fairly safe.

The Bible seemed like magic 2000 years ago.

Now its seems pretty much easily reproduced ALL through human means. Fire and Brimstone...Easy. Plagues? Yea got those. EQ machines, weather control...Im pretty certain if we applied ourselves we could turn water into wine.

Did Jesus REALLY walk on water...or just through low tide, that can be calculated on computers now..

Do you see where Im going with this?

There is really very little mystical "power" in the bible anymore, when you compare it to what we can achieve by human hands...

Resurrection? Probably advanced CPR techniques, etc.

I think we are in a terrible position where the powers of the world, have technological advances, that make them priest-kings of a sort, that can fool anyone.

Ive never encountered a "Demon" my entire life...

I can imagine what it would be like dealing with an AI..and that would probably be pretty close, something thats NOT human, but with human intelligence.

I dont fault anyone for believing things that happen in these later days...If your eyes, ears, touch decieve you, if it can all be easily "deep faked" in one way or another...even your brainwaves...emotions...

what can you believe?

You have to wake up...become Lucid...and realize its all a dream...a delusion...nothing is truly real, except your own personal experience. And all that is just memories of events past that have ceased to exist, and are like a burnt candle wick, something you cant fix, change, or revisit, and it doesnt matter anyways because the only moment is now.
Always remember these words: Work hard, study well, and eat and sleep plenty! That is the Turtle Hermit way! We must master the art of peace in addition to the art of war!
