Canadian ballots have always been counted by the two poll clerks from different parties who checked your name off the voters' list and handed you your ballot. The ballot box never left their sight, and they counted them at the voting booth.

The last election was the first time they only had one poll clerk at each ballot box. They blamed Covid. They are constantly pushing for mail-in ballots and proportional representation, but it hasn't happened yet.

If they ever succeed in pushing proportional representation, the country will quickly fall apart as regional separatist parties will flourish. We're already half-way there with vaccine mandates and quarantines for crossing provincial lines.
