"hola senior! soy touristas y no quiero problemas. esta bien" probably would have ended that about 3 minutes sooner. im not gonna lie i wouldnt be super comfy if i got stopped at an armed road block either but i wouldnt start crying like a bitch. i had to ask directions once actually about 90 miles southof the border from a group of 4 or 5 mexican army men (or were they??) armed to the teeth. they were very kind and helpful and had zero intention of fucking with me.

I had acquaintances in high school whose parents had been in the US for 20 years- from Mexico- and spoke no English.

My boyfriend and I were driving around that area about 15 years ago (in a cherry red tourist VW bug) and got pulled over and shook down for cash. He didn't speak Spanish so they had to deal with me.

They were corrupt police and explained that we could pay them cash now or spend two days in jail (for doing nothing). We negotiated a price and moved on, no pants were peed.

The paramilitary guy showed more affection to the driver than his boyfriend was showing...

I have had 2 cops point their guns at me at the same time on the driver and passenger side windows of my car over a misunderstanding about gun target practice on some land (there ended up never even being a police report filed over the incident). I didn't panic at the time, but I sure broke down a few days later after thinking about how close I came to being pumped full of lead.

I speak a tiny bit of Spanish, little more then guys here, but I'd bet a lot they ran into one of the many small to large self-defense forces communities all over Mehico have been forced to form to protect their communities and business.
