But to summarize: That "peasant girl" in the first scene is not a peasant girl, but a Maiden of the Spear, one of the few female Aielmen warriors (most are dudes), a highly skilled desert people who were invading the world at that particular time (20 years before the show's events).

The dude with the heron sword who helps her was a character in the very first episode.. Rand's dad, in case you hadn't recognized him.
