The Famous Fossils Scientists Got Incredibly Wrong
"We sort of take for granted the depictions of prehistoric beasties illustrated in the books of our childhood. But piecing together Earth's murky past is a lot harder than it sounds.

Scientists have to rely on fragmentary bones, weathered footprints, impressions in rock – these don't always capture the fine details of the complex, living, breathing animal that passed through or died there.

Sometimes, while doing this painstaking work, researchers get it wrong. And not just a little wrong! Here are some of our favorite fossil flubs, and what we have learned from correcting them."

Re: The Famous Fossils Scientists Got Incredibly Wrong
Anatomical study was still a primitive science when they first tried to draw dinosaurs. They got everything wrong.

Even the stuff done a few decades ago is considered out of date based on new evidence.

Hallucigenia ha ha ha chuckle It was decades before they decided they'd been picturing it upside down and now if finally has a head. But then Walcott had misclassified most of the Burgess shale specimens then shelved and forgotten them anyway.
My favorite though is the one Walcott found [link to www.(XXXXXX).com (secure)] that he decided was a jelly fish and later discovered to be the mouth parts of Anomalocaris [link to www.(XXXXXX).com (secure)]

(Sustitute google where the links above say XXXXXX, GLP software thinks it's a nono.
