Anonymous Coward User ID: 8358 ![]() 02/04/2008 09:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Good start is to learn all you're basic open chords. majors. minors, sevenths. Then try and learn the blues scale in all positions. Its movable and can cover minor and major keys as well. If you want to play lead you need to slowly develop technique, so pick a few phrases and repeat ad nauseum until they occur without thinking. You start building your bag of riffs. If you want to play classical, jazz or good finger picking get a teacher. Also find others and jam as much as possible. You'll learn and discover lots. Have a good journey. Once your finger tips harden and you get a bit of hand strength to make clean chords you're cruisin. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 367962 ![]() 02/04/2008 09:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've been playing for 20 years with nary a lesson. You just need to start with the simple chords using open strings (the 'root' chords at the nut) - A, E, C, D, G and F. Then learn how to 'barre', or drape you index finger across all six strings, and form the same 'root' chords ahead of the index finger using your other three fingers. Now you can slide these 'shapes' all over the fretboard and play any chord in any key. You're off and running! Get books, read, and play til your fingers bleed (more appropriate for someone like me who learned on a fender strat, but I agree with that notion). I have a good ear and could always play along to my favorite songs. You'll be surprised, if you have a good ear too, at how simple some of these hit songs really are in terms of the guitar lines. Soloing will take you a while, and you need to get an electric for that, but you'll progress there eventually. For now, play chords on that acoustic, I still pull mine out and play along to CMT all the time. Country and acoustics go great together, cause all they really play are the basic chords. Have fun with it, you've got a lifetime of enjoyment ahead of you! |

I suppose just play what's in your soul. It's where all music originated from in the first place. Before music was written it was played and before it was played it was felt. Ok, I know that's a little cheesy, but it's seriously my own musical philosophy and my own way of comforting myself because I can't read music. Dreams will begin as they fade into chaos. |

Ok, I know that's a little cheesy, but it's seriously my own musical philosophy and my own way of comforting myself because I can't read music. I play with plenty of amazing musicians who don't read music. I learned to read when I was very young but am rarely in a situation where I have to. But I have come across people who are so drawn to music, so focused on it, that they took the time to learn. I say this because I have also come across wanna-bees who feel that music schools teach it right out of you. I.e., they squash out the joy of music. That's pure BS though. It's like anything you might get interested in - if you're REALLy, TRULY interested, you will make time to learn it thoroughly. |

Awakened Me User ID: 349213 ![]() 02/04/2008 11:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | a very good thing to keep in mind is practice and learn both chords and single notes together. i picked up the guitar when i was about 14 and taught myself how to play... but i hit a roadblock after a year or so because i had only learned single notes and power chords. i could play solos and riffs quickly, coherently, and smoothly... but couldn't strum chords for shit. took a few months to reteach my fingers how to position for chords and what chords were in which key etc (i can't read music, but can play by ear or seeing someone play) i'm sure i could list a lot of better advice, but for some reason i can't seem to form a coherent sentencs, lol... luckily my dyslexia isn't acting up or you would have an even harder time understanding me I WILL NOT let consequences dictate my course of action! A.K.A - Aresh, Awakened Me, An Ominous Coward (Howard), The Goddess Pandora, Aumon Haht Fith Ashai, Within The Flower and a few others... ------------------------------------ In all things, i am flowing back thru and in and out, within and without and beyond them. This is the Cosm. This is both I and You. I am the Truth, and I am the Lie - I am the very spark of the Divine! ------------------ as soon as you even go near these things your ego knows what it is.. its all like "what ya gonna do with that?" "Hope you not gonna take it" "cause i will throw myself down on the floor and scratch, claw and bite and tantrum" - Kyuubi "the gift of love makes much more sense than frankincense gold and myrhh" - Only Me |
