That's not even close to being correct. Pretty much every place in the country is within 200 miles of some major city or some military target. By your logic, every place on the country would be vaporized. The "turned to ash in an instant" radius of a nuke is much smaller than you believe, on the order of a few miles for higher yields. Most would suffer greatly and die of starvation, medical issues, and radiation.
