Why not just get Mexican truck drivers? Obviously Americans don’t want to do this job for the wages corporations want to pay!

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

there are many ways you could have actually fixed this problem.
1 is try the self driving truck prototypes i bet they arent as bad as 18 year old new drivers
2 the military, use the reserves that we have built up that dont really do anything, give them cdl classes
3 drones, you could have contracted the airforce to make some kind of drone delivery technology for heavy crates and shipping, china has drones for human travel not sure how good they are but its better than 18 year old new gen drivers.

They want to smash the truckers because they won't back down. Another example of the most competent getting cancelled and replaced with NPC facsimiles that don't know shit about their field and will follow the plan like sheep. Forget the fact that they are incompetent as long as they are malleable. This will end badly.

How about just fixing the trucking industry? Start with safe trucks and you might get more good professional drivers.

For every Kyle Carpenter that jumped on a grenade or brave pilot that stayed with the plane to save people on the ground there have been 1,000 truck drivers who steered 80,000 pounds in the direction it would do the least harm at the cost of their own life because they didn't want to punish the kids in the back seat for their mom or dad's fatal violation of Newton's first law.

Good luck getting Insurance companies to cover them.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79565603

They probably don’t. We got hit by a 30 ft box truck last week while sitting still at a red light but in a grocery parking lot. Kid wouldn’t get out of truck, but the owners came out and sweet talked us, tried to get us to take cash. They offered up insurance papers, said we’d could choose. Cops won’t come out since no one hurt.

Long story short. They deny everything. Kid probably wasn’t insured yet.

Our insurance has to handle it. I have lots of pictures. Lots of regrets of not recording their spiel and wrestling a good witness. No one wants to do that anymore.

Underride guards, disc brakes, automatic emergency braking, tire pressure monitor, stability control, EBS brakes that respond to the driver 1/5 of a second faster with a more powerful and intelligent brake application? These are the things that world class safe trucks have.

Trucks in the USA still use the same valves that George Westinghouse designed 150 years ago for steam trains to apply the brakes. The rest of the world moved on.

Braking signals that work at near the speed of light are better than braking signals that physically can't break the sound barrier...

Anyone who has ever panic stopped an 80,000 pound semitruck in the real world wishes he had better brakes as well as having a full understanding of how Newton's first law works..

they can already get a cdl at 18 and drive in state. Problem is young people want time to have fun and hang out with friends. this wont help. Any 18 year old that wants to drive a truck already has a license.

Its a shit job and most people that try it hate it.

A place I worked had a couple of fairly tight blind side docks that I used to charge owner operators a $20 to put their truck into. When the knights of the road would ask the warehouse guys for an easier dock, they would give them the price and point them to me. I did that for more red neck white men than I did anybody else. Lots of truck drivers that can't back up.

I acquired a used vehicle about 6 weeks ago. It is a 2004 model and doesn't have all of the latest gizmos.

But inside the glove box is a little molded clip with an icon of a tire pressure gauge. I assume a tire pressure gauge was mounted in that clip as standard equipment.

That is what we need to get back to. Basic responsibility for maintaining and operating a motor vehicle.

It is a fact that for most accidents in which a truck kills people, the truck driver didn't cause the accident.

CDL trucks are 5% of the vehicles on the road, they are overwhelmingly mostly owned by the richest 0.1% of the people and are involved in 20-25% of deaths on highways.

The trucks are 50 years outdated because government is for sale and it's more profitable to buy politicians and kill people than it is to run trucks that are safe.

So do truck drivers still check their tire pressures (or even thump the tires with a bat), or do they rely on the blinky lights on the dash?

Safe trucks are great, but safe drivers would be even better.

 Quoting: Crunch62

A thumped or pressure checked tire can still fail 6 hours into a trip on a hot summer day and leave a 7 foot long 80 pound chunk of rubber in the center of a highway lane.

A good driver would want to maybe get that dash indication before that tire fails to the point of coming apart and some woman looses control of her car and kills herself and her kids dodging a chunk of his tire.

How many people died this past year from chunks of semitruck tires in the road? I know it's more than just a few.

The other thing is that the margin for error goes down with the newer super single tires. Instead of 80,000 pounds on 18 wheels its 80,000 pounds on 10 wheel/tire assemblies. The failure of a single tire on a non-steer axle of five axle 10 wheel truck/trailer is much more likely to create a catastrophic loss of stability than a single tire failure on the same truck with 18 wheels.

It's less redundancy and margin for error with super singles but less expensive total cost and better fuel economy. Money before safety...
