The more dependent you are on the government for every need the easier it is to convert the masses to slavery and discourage independent thoughts or questions
There is enough federal land to give everyone 40 acres and independence. With some slight cuts in military spending everyone could be off grid, totally green, and self sufficient, with no need to start wars with other countries

But to have a woodlot for heat, corn/hay for horses,cattle etc, plus a shooting range and stocked pond, you need a little more elbow room. The feds are just going to give it to China anyways
