Re: Shortwave radio help please
Hello, fellow GPL brothers/sisters:

I’m trying to purchase an addition to my bug-out bag with the purchase of a SW radio. I’d already purchased an incredibly cheap and ridiculous one that doesn’t work PERIOD. My price point, unfortunately, is within the the hundred dollar range so I was hoping I could get good suggestions from you guys, considering I.m a complete novice in this field.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Why "shortwave" ?

Just for listening to the world?

Let me know what you want to accomplish and I'll try to locate some affordable radio gear for you and post it here.

I used to live in Saudi Arabia as a young teen girl. (My Father worked for Oil Co.)
My sister and I couldn’t get American music unless you had a shortwave radio. Looking back, this was AWESOME, now I’d just like to get the same. (For different reasons, obviously...)

Perfect... let me have a look and I'll see what I can find. I'm a CHEAP bastard but I always try to find the best gear.

I personally use a few base models for the home. (Yeesu and Kenwood BRICKS for the '90s...) but have a couple of portables that I have loved over the years.

I'm assuming you want something portable?

Re: Shortwave radio help please
Don't watch that staged up survivor bullshit. If you really gotta watch something, go to Utube and look at how to build a shelter and how to make a stove from mud, that kind of shit. Better yet, find some damn woods by your house, take your shit out there and spend a day and a night. That will begin to teach you what you need to know. Sitting on your ass watching videos just won't cut it when the chips are down.

Agreed completely. I’d like to counter your argument, if you don’t mind...

I’m not a ‘bro’ dude but whatevs. What is ‘baofeng u5r’ though? And how is that relevant to the the thread title?

Those are short range walkie-talkies, good for a couple miles. But are very capable and do most VHF/UHF ham bands and more. Get one for the kit.

A chart...
HF = High Frequency 0mhz to 50mhz (shortwave) range=global
VHF= Very High Frequency 50mhz to 200mhz range=75 miles
UHF= Ultra High Frequency 200mhz and up range= 10 miles

Re: Shortwave radio help please
As a start you might want to check out the radios that are listed at the site linked below. The site is entitled

"10 Best Portable SSB Radios In 2022 – Expert Review"

[link to www.aidsquilt.org (secure)]

Or just do a Google or DuckDuckGo search on portable shortwave radios with SSB.

"Must Haves" in a shortwave radio are digital tuning (aka PLL tuning) AND SSB (which stands for Single Sideband which is a mode of communication used by most amateur radio operators and some shortwave radio stations).

Re: Shortwave radio help please
As far as a shortwave reciever that looks pretty darn good from the specs, (as well as the reviews)

This one looks good and, is only 80 bucks on Amazon.

What I like:

Frequency Range: (With Sideband in the Sortwave range)

-FM: 88.0 – 108 MHz
-AM: 520 – 1710 kHz (Tuning step 9/10 KHz selectable)
-LW: 153 KHz to 513 KHz
-SW: 1711 HHz to 29999 KHz

Tuning Methods:

-Direct keypad entry
-Auto scan
-Manual dial tuning

The price...

What I don't like:

No extended bands, (Air/VHF/UHF)

I'm not familiar with "Tecsun" (but their radios are all reviews pretty well...)

Camp out in freezing rain and make a fire with wet material.

As for radio.most on here just want something that hacks cellphones but are too afraid to say it.

Naked show is about how fast a person starves to death.

Re: Shortwave radio help please
With SW the antenna is the key, a moderately priced radio with a good antenna is better than an expensive rig with weak antenna. You can build your own or start with something easy as this which will help a bit

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

If you want to go for something better you could start here

[link to www.hamradiosecrets.com (secure)]

Also, time of day effects reception, you will pick up more at night at you location because the radiowave will propagate off the ionosphere and travel farther.

Re: Shortwave radio help please
You can get a cheap, even portable radio. Just make sure to get a few yards of wire to go with it, maybe 6 or 7 yards. I have a tiny radio but attach the wire to the antenna (very crude) and I can receive broadcasts from pretty much anywhere.
