Another earthquake was recorded near Matata in the Bay of Plenty at 2.51am on Saturday.

GNS Science says the 3.3 magnitude quake was centred 10km north of Matata. It was 2km deep.

It was the seventh small earthquake to be recorded this month to date near Matata. Others occurred on:

18 February, magnitude 3.5, 1km deep, 8.05pm, 10km north

17 February, magnitude 3.6, 5km deep, 10.46pm, 10km north

16 February, magnitude 2.6, 5km deep, 1.44pm, 10km north

11 February, magnitude 3.3, 5km deep, 10.42pm, 10km north east

03 February, magnitude 3.2, 2km deep, 3.23am, 10km north

03 February, magnitude 4.1, 1km deep, 3.17am, 10km north.

GNS Science says there is a significant swarm of quakes in the region: more than 2000 tremors have been recorded in the Matata area since the beginning of 2005.

I just moved back to Colorado after living in Maui for 7 hellish years.

It's tough to make a living there and the locals will treat you like shit for a while. They will call you a fucking hoale and stuff.

Good luck to you. Those 7 years I lived in Maui were the worst in my life.

I bet you if you checked around you'll find many many more people from the mainland who feel this way.

Hawaii is expensive and the locals rule, but there are many perks to living in the tropics. 32 K will get you by, arely, just start growing some dope and sell it, hehehe, then the locals will love ya!

I live in Yuma and yes we are rocken and rollen. The earthquakes started on the 9th have not stopped. Say some prayers they are getting a little scary.

yes and no to both questions... volcanos that are showing signs of activity (eq swarms, hot springs increased activity, etc) are considered live and can go, but will not necessarily. This one may have gone off in the last 10,000 years so may be live, but since nothing can be said for certain is called "dormant" aka sleeping. A sleeping giant can awaken. When ever eq's go off it puts pressures on the other regional faults, if they don't release that pressure through small and micro eq's than they can go off in a big sort of way, but it can take some time, months possibly, depends upon the type of fault it is (strike/slip, creep, horse n graben, etc). There is more than one fault zone in that area, there are thousands, each getting a portion of the energy as it dissipates farther from the source.

And you may not while someone a few hundred feet gets a shocked look on his/her face and says "you feel that?"

Reason: Each eq distributes energy out in consentric circles (eq nodes or peaks). If you were to slice the earth open and paint the energy distribution, you'd see sine waves of energy flowing through the earth with the epicenter at the source. These sine waves can come horizontal of vertical through the earth. The closer you are to the epicenter, the stronger the magnitude, the more likely you feel the energy dissipation felt as shaking. It's actually waves, and it depends upon the type of wave form as to whether you feel it, what kind of damage it can do to different kinds of structures. For instance, one type can shake the hell out of 1 story buildings and 3+ story ones next door don't get the same level of damage. Some put wood frames in more danger than steel frames, and vice-versa. If you plot damage from an EQ on a map, the trend you see is circles going out from the epicenter where it's either the heaviest damage or even just where it's felt (strength and distance variables). Additionally, soil/subsurface factors also change the effects. If you're on bedrock the intensity is less than depositional (valley floor) soil, and more intense (even amplified) on bay mud, wet sand, and river/stream deposits.

And she has family who live there... and if she DOESN'T go there with a normal mainland holier-than-thoue attitude, she'll do just fine.

My mom lives there for part of the year, has for 10 years, and I go and hang when I can. Neither of us go there with attitude, calling it a different country, acting like we're better, and we and everyone else we know there (some who've lived there for 5, 10, and 20 years, full time) have never gotten that kind of reaction. How people react to you is in part how you treat or react to them.

general rules for survival there:
-hoale (pronounced howl-e)= whiteman or mainlander
-learn some of the local lingo, get a hawaiian dictionary before you go to live
-have a sense of humor, laugh at yourself occasionally
-it's the "mainland". don't use America or United States... they ARE the 50th state for goodness sake
-live within your means. pick fruit from a tree rather than go to a store.
-maintain a happy healthy attitude. swim at the beach and walk rather than just soak up the sun, talk to others, smile occasionally

Azores Islands (off coast of Spain in the Atlantic) had
5.2, 4.7, 5.0 and 5.3, between 9 and 10:30AM Sat morning all 10km in depth... looks as if Pico is getting grouchy also!

and a 4.6 Tuesday... part of the ring of fire... and a volcano there. northern columbia is getting 5.3 and 4.6 near their volcano.

5.6 and 6.8 at the south sandwich island region on 20th and just an hour ago. Volcanic islands on it's own plate (sandwich plate) east of a spreading center.

All the activity we've been seeing for the past 2 weeks seems related to volcanos in different area and regions... some are putting pressure on faults and causing activity local to the volcano (aka southern california near and related to baja). I'm beginning to see the pattern... not clear as to why yet, but there IS a pattern.
