B.C. enters window of increased quake risk

Experts warn that British Columbia's south coast has entered a two-week window of increased probability in which a major earthquake could occur.

While the chances of that happening are still very slim, such an event could trigger a tsunami equal to the size and the strength of what hit the Sumatra-Andaman Islands in 2004.

Seismologists with B.C.'s Geological Survey of Canada made the announcement after measuring a series of minor tremors deep below the Earth's surface and along the Cascadia Subduction Zone -- a long, sloping fault that stretches from northern California to Vancouver Island.

The zone, which separates the Juan de Fuca Plate and the North American Plate, has a very large fault area which can produce large earthquakes with a magnitude of 9.0 or greater if a rupture were to occur.

"Where the Juan de Fuca plate is subducting beneath the North American plate, and where those plates are touching, it's locked," earthquake seismologist Alison Bird told CTV.ca.

"To the east of that, every 14 months we see low frequency tremor activity ... sliding along that zone, which is almost directly beneath us," Bird told CTV.ca in a phone interview from the Geological Survey of Canada headquarters in Sidney, B.C., near Victoria.

"When that happens, we believe what it's doing is loading additional stress onto the locked zone. So if that locked zone happens to be close to critical, it could theoretically trigger a mega earthquake."

Bird and her colleagues noticed a phenomenon, called Episodic Tremor and Slip (ETS), occurs in the area about every 14 months -- each time adding stress to the fault line and increasing the likelihood of a major earthquake.

B.C. put on alert for huge quake

VANCOUVER — Scientists have alerted British Columbia's emergency-planning department to the possibility of a catastrophic earthquake striking the province's southwest coast next week. While the probability of a quake is still low, rapid strides in earthquake detection have given federal scientists with the Pacific Geoscience Centre on Vancouver Island greater confidence in their ability to predict when and where one will occur.

Although 19831 has the wrong year another slow slip tremor is expected in two months, April 08 (every 14 months) so it is a good thing they posted this to bring attention to that.

If Juan de Fucca every goes it will make a California Quake look like a minor event. They say the NW subduction zone could be similar to Sumatra 2004 event.

Canada puts out an alert during these slow tremor events but U.S. doesn't. Hopefully, this year they will.

BTW, when the Juan de Fucca plate goes they theorize that there will not be much warning for the NW residents such as earthquake swarms, etc., that California gets. It could also activate the volcanoes.

As long as the hatred and violence and anger increases at this time in the world when it shouldnt then you can expect more giant earthquakes and huge volcanic eruptions. It will happen because that hatred and anger causes pressure to build in the forces of nature.

SOD, yes I do believe that the earth reacts to our actions and thoughts but these geological events would happen even if we weren't here as they have for millions of years. It's just Mother Earth's nature and she reacts more to the moon, sun and other cosmic bodies than she does to us.

But there is now no denying we are a force upon the Earth. We speed up the process of our own destruction and the upheaval in the Earth. Just drive down a highway and see what a force we are upon the land.

SOD, yes I agree we are speeding up the destruction. But when we are gone I think Mother Earth will continue to do her thing with or without us. I just feel that we don't have as much power as the sun, etc., in the long range. Our greed and lack of respect for the earth will be our downfall.

I just think that anything we will do will just mean that we and other life are gone from this planet. But I have faith in Mother Earth that she would recover and eventually bring life back to this planet, just maybe not making the mistake of evolving human beings again.

So, are you suggesting that the earth without angry and violent humans would never have giant earthquakes and huge volcanic eruptions??? Methinks this is how the earth was formed in the first place! Mountains, land mass, oceans, etc., are a result of earthquakes and volcanos.

I do, however, think that weather is effected by Man's bad habits.

Residents of the Imperial Valley are living on shaky ground these days.

Since Friday, cities such as Calexico and El Centro, as well as Mexicali across the border, have been rocked by hundreds of earthquakes, from tiny to teeth-rattling -- three have registered a magnitude of 5.0 or more.

The onslaught of temblors is known as a swarm, in which quakes of varying sizes can strike every few minutes, said Kate Hutton, a staff seismologist at the California Institute of Technology. The Imperial Valley and Baja are prone to the swarms, she said; they can last a few days to a week.

Though the quakes aren't breaking any geologic records, they've caused several sleepless nights for Calexico resident Barbara Lopez.

"It's been scary," said Lopez, a 27-year-old apartment leasing agent, of what she describes as nonstop quakes. "You're like constantly thinking: 'Is the big one going to hit? Are we prepared?' Of course we're not."

Lopez has already stashed her $300 mirror between the couch and the wall, along with her computer and breakable family photos. She and co-workers at Desert Properties in El Centro spent part of Tuesday running through earthquake drills in the office.

Firefighters in the region say that although the quakes are jangling people's nerves, they have not caused any structural damage or injuries.

"In the grand scheme of California earthquakes, they've been pretty mild," said Richard Burns, a battalion chief in the El Centro Fire Department. The Calexico Fire Department sent a mutual assistance team to Mexicali recently to check for damage to the city's downtown but didn't find anything serious, said Calexico firefighter Joe Guerra.

The region sits atop a geothermal area, where past volcanic activity has kept underground rocks hot, Hutton said. That heats the groundwater, which could lubricate local fault lines.

El Centro coffee shop cashier Gloria Estrada has been running for cover in doorways at home and work over the last few days. Although her radio crashed to the floor on a recent night, in her opinion the locals "are used to it."

Lopez describes the tremors, which scare her young daughters, "like a big rumble, then all of a sudden the house starts moving."

"Right when you're like going back to sleep, it starts shaking."

Fortunately she has a built-in earthquake alarm: Her two basset hounds, Tiny and Tubby, start barking each time the earth's about to move.

1136 quakes on the USGS USA map now. Yesterday it was around 800! The average is around 700! It must be so scary for the poor souls who are living with this on a daily basis.! it appears that the area was volcanic in the 1800's and my concern is thet the geothermal plant may be sitting on a Pandora's box caused by it's own greed.When will poeple learn?

Just a question, from someone who 'isn't' savy on all this earthquake activity, are squarms an indication of something 'brewing' that will ultimately 'kabang' within a day or so, week or so, etc? Is this the pre warning of something 'building up'?

Or is it due to weather???

Seens as its winter there, we are in Oz by the way, I was thinking, 'well it can't be from heat'...so is the 'cold' making the contractions?

I'm mainly asking as I get '????' hard to explain, but just before world disasters, I'm very restless..and I get 'strong' intuitive prompts of 'its just about to happen' or dreams etc.

By reading that news articles, I was sensing that some are saying 'oh its fine, swarms happen, nothing to worry about, they'll soon pass' etc.
