A new mom who broke out in agonizing blisters during her pregnancy says she was left stunned to learn she was “allergic” to her own baby.

Fiona Hooker — who hails from Hampshire, England — got pregnant with her second child in late 2020.



The first two trimesters of the pregnancy went smoothly, but the now 32-year-old began to notice red spots on her stomach two months before she was due to give birth.

“I went to the doctor after a few days because they were getting more and more itchy and unbearable,” Hooker told South West News Service in an interview.



At eight months pregnant, the welts had become so severe, that Hooker had to go to the emergency room.

“I couldn’t bear it [the pain] . . . they gave me four days of oral steroids which really helped calm it down,” she stated.

On June 13, 2021, Hooker gave birth to her son, Barney — but her health woes worsened.


“I exploded into blisters on my tummy, chest, arms and legs,” the mom stated. “Everywhere you would hold a baby. It was quite difficult.”

Doctors were initially confused by Hooker’s condition, especially because she already had a 3-year-old daughter, Phoebe, and her first pregnancy had no complications.

But after birthing Barney, Hooker was diagnosed with pemphigoid gestationis — an autoimmune disorder “caused by a woman’s immune system producing autoantibodies and mistakenly attacking her own skin.”

The disorder affects about one in every 50,000 pregnant women, according to health experts.
