The US Military provided them weapons and money and direction too. In the end many governments of the world legitimized the Taliban control by recognizing their new government after they killed many civilians and ousted the previous government. In comparison, Russia has a legitimate claim to do what they are doing - and don't believe what the media is telling you about all this. Yet they are treating this completely different than the terrorist take over in Afghanistan. One is supported by TPTB, one isn't.
