I have things to trade but the holder of the medical supplies wants gold or silver. I offer him gold because he doesn't know the different between 9k and 24k. I sell him the 9k at whatever exchange rate is set after SHTF. I purchased the gold at 1/10 the price but used it at its full value. Then we get into covering lead, copper etc in a layer of gold. Who's going to be sitting there punching or drilling gold to test its purity during shtf?

But I’m sure there are easy ways like trying to melt it or something

You think people will be mining tungseng and mixing different alloys to fake golds non magnetic composition and weight? Yeah maybe large organized groups dealing with very high amounts but not the every day average Joe.

It is too expensive and does not have a real history of being used in actual situations. Silver is far more reasonable and useful for everyday needs and prices. No one is making change for 1oz. Of gold, you are just going to become a target. Items like lighters and simple things end up having more value and are more easily bartered. Too many people have grandiose ideas about SHTF scenarios that are not based in reality

So if a silver coin looks like a shiny white metal, feels heavy, and responds to a strong magnet in the paramagnetic way, then you know it's silver. (A paramagnetic metal is not attracted to a magnet, but resists being pulled sideways along it. It's a very specific and easy to recognize behavior.) Gold is a bit more difficult to check.
