However, Putin has shown that Russia has the same old imperial ambitions. The entire reason for NATO's existence was to resist a Russian invasion of Europe. IIRC, Putin described the breakup of the USSR as "the greatest political disaster of the 20th century". I think he wants to go down in history as the Czar who restored the Russian Empire. That includes Ukraine, of course, but also the Baltics. THAT is when it gets rough. Putin will use the same excuse in the Baltics, that ethnic Russians are being mistreated. That is getting too close to home for Swedes and Finns. YES, they should join NATO ASAP, but they also need to start recruiting, training, and equipping larger military forces. Putin is nervous because there are anti-aircraft and anti-missile missiles in Poland, et al. Why is it not equally provocative that Putin has similar systems on his side of the border? We left the INF treaty because Russia was cheating like crazy. I was a military office during the Cold War. That is just how the Russians always operate. Treaties are only meant to restrain the West and not Russia. I pray for peace. Shalom |

If you want peace, prepare for war. I forget which Roman said that, but it is as true now as then. Note that the Third Reich did not try to invade Switzerland. |
