They need higher profits for 2 main reasons and both concern inflation.

1- they profits may seem high but with 10% inflation it isn't as high as you think if you are not comparing the money is real terms

2 the cost to reinvest in like kind production has skyrocketed so it will cost a lot to replace the oil they pumped out with new oil.

In New York state the governor suspended all gasoline tax until the end of the year a couple weeks ago. As soon as that was done the price went up instead of down.

At this point I don't think there's going to be any relief and it's never going to go back to levels that it was, we are on a steady path towards Financial ruin.

If they did that, people and companies would buy out the inventory to beat the deadline, and since you can't wait til the last day, gas would sell out immediately, everywhere.

That's rational behavior.

The idea is to make law and policy where rational behavior results in people following the laws. It's called leading.
