How can 3.5 million people be invisible & find toilets?!? Population of Ukraine is 43 Million give or take. 3.5 Million is only a small percentage of that. The Russians abducted the mayor of Melitopol and installed a Pro Russian Mayor, the area is under Russian Control and the new mayor addressed the people to adapt to the new way of life. The population of Melitopol is somewhere around 150,000. Population of Kiev is 2.8 Million give or take. There are many other towns that make up the population, rural areas not calculated Kyiv 2,797,553 Kharkiv 1,430,885 Dnipro 1,032,822 Donetsk 1,024,700 Odessa 1,001,558 Zaporizhia 796,217 Lviv 717,803 Kryvyi Rih 652,380 Mykolayiv 510,840 Mariupol 481,626 Source [link to worldpopulationreview.com (secure)] At the start of this conflict, people had a choice and many fled to Lviv which was seen as furthest away from the conflict, others headed straight for neighbouring countries. Many decided to stay or if they were male were forced to stay due to the new conscription laws. Now we have a situation where towns close to Kyiv have had to evacuate, this is a situation playing out in many towns and cities. People close to fighting are even unable to leave hence the need now for humanitarian corridoors. It’s actually quite organised when these people arrive at the border of Romania, Poland etc. The borders have been opened and the Ukrainian people have been welcomed with open arms. I don’t think it’s that difficult to imagine that 3.5 million women, children, elderly, injured and men where they have dodged the draft have been able to leave the country in weeks of conflict we have had. This has been ratcheting up slowly but the initial panic of the invasion was where the largest exodus took place. You have to bear in mind that Ukraine borders 7 countries and people have been moving in every direction including to supposedly safer parts of the Ukraine. I guess we will see in time in the Census of various countries how many stay in diaspora or return back to the Ukraine. |
