This is big. Very big.
Between backing the ruble with gold at 1gram per 5000rubles and now forcing everyone to buy gas and oil in rubles he has effectively backed the ruble by a basket of commodities.
I think this is why the ruble has rallied so hard. There's no other currency in the world backed by a basket of commodities. The dollar is backed by opecs oil but that situation falls apart if the Saudis take Yuan for Oil.
