Wealthy people that can afford to pay cash outright for large purchases seldom do. It makes much more sense to finance a deal at a cost of capital that is less than the return on investment of cash on hand. Not a hard concept to understand.

Musk can make more money in interest or return on investment of his cash on hand than the interest he will pay to creditors that have financed his purchase.

It's a no brainer. No different than underpayment of taxes throughout the year so that money can be invested instead of giving the Fed and interest free loan and them giving you back what you overpaid.
