Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75223829 Hey, you'd be surprised how many Americans don't regularly eat them, let alone prepare them at home. It's not as though a failure will result in illness or death, but could lead to a lot of discomfort and that will have a negative impact on continuing to survive on the stash. People will get fed up and make hasty decisions so they can eat something they're used to |

Do you know what ratio is best to optimize protein per calorie? Do you eat them as a regular part of your current diet? How many dishes can you prepare or will you just be consuming unseasoned plain rice and beans? Do you know how to refry beans? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76459817 Do you know how to get to Taco Bell/McDonald's/Burger King? Do you ask the teenager making your food the ratio to best optimize protein per calorie? Did you know that you don't have to optimize protein per calorie (whatever the fuck your point is here)? Do you regularly eat fast food? How many meals can you get out of one drive-thru pass? Do you know how to microwave your fast food leftovers? derp. |

They are very nice, moist, and last forever. When TSHTF, being able to keep clean will mean a lot. Saves water for drinking. Keeps adult diaper rash, crotch-rot, and bean-cheese from taking hold. It will be a tough row to hoe if you are stinking, itchy, and scratching yourself raw while waiting to starve to death. Even picking your nose would take on a new hell of it's own. Prepare to keep yourself clean in a no running water and no soap doom scenario. |

How about a pole shift? How about a thousand nuclear power plants along the coastlines, all under water ? That's not even scratching the surface... It's not as though a failure will result in illness or death, but could lead to a lot of discomfort and that will have a negative impact on continuing to survive on the stash. People will get fed up and make hasty decisions so they can eat something they're used to If you undercook beans, you can actually die in agony. Cooking requires some time and enough water. Cooking bean meals should be planned for the after-initial doom time. When lots of survivors can pifch in and help with the fuel gathering, water fetching, pot cleaning and standing guard. Actual doom-time is a time for ready to eat, no cooking foods. Jerky, pilot bread, canned pastas, canned foods of all kinds, protien bars and drinks, cookies, crackers, peanut butter, hard candies, Any time you can heat water for hot tea or coffee is good for comfort and morale. Your planning needs to include the datails of living hour to hour, not just one pot of beans to the next. Have a tote ready with a pot for heating water, strong mugs for hot drinks, spoons, teas, instant coffees, creamers and sugars. A plastic jug of real honey and some cup-o-soups and hot apple cider mixes should be handy. Restaurant supply stores have great dishes and mugs. Get a stack of soup bowls. Have two sizes. One for adults, one for kids. Have identical dishes. Everyone can see that everyone is getting the same portion and no fights can break out over someone getting more than someone else. The devil is in the details. |
