Your brain hallucinates your conscious reality | Anil Seth
Stumbled across this today and found it pretty interesting. Just wanting to share as I was deep into the DMT post earlier this morning which led me to this interesting TED talk.

Re: Your brain hallucinates your conscious reality | Anil Seth
Brains definitely don't see actual reality.

What brain does is take inputs from all the senses, construct a model of reality based on those inputs, and then treat that model as reality.

One could definitely classify the whole process as "brain hallucinating reality", and they wouldn't be wrong.

The proof that that's how brain works is extremely simple, too.

Remember all the times when you were searching for something that was literally in front of your eyes, but you just couldn't see it until somebody close by pointed it out for you? That happens to everybody.

This is also the "secret" of hypnotic suggestions and hypnotically-induced hallucinations.

If you look around the net, you will find plenty of examples of hypnotists suggesting their subjects that they will either see something that's not there, or better yet, that they will not see what is actually there... like a person entering the room, for example.

In the latter case, the subject's brain literally filters out all the information connected to the suggested "non-present" person, and the subject genuinely doesn't "see" that person.

Their senses still detect the person, but the brain itself discards that visual and audio input... until the subject tries to touch the person that's "not there", and they find that either their own body (the brain, really) simply refuses to perform the action they're trying to perform (the touching), or they completely snap out of it, and suddenly see the person "appearing" before them, as if out of thin air.

Brains, or rather, all constructs of intelligence, whether biological, synthetic, or purely informational (the last one being this "reality" itself) are the most fascinating subjects one can ever study.

Re: Your brain hallucinates your conscious reality | Anil Seth
The mind filters too much. Ever hear of a SEP? That stands for "somebody else's problem". If you see something your mind can't handle it flags it as a SEP. And you then don't see it. One of my strokes damaged that part of my brain slightly. I only see a small part of what's around me. Like looking through a peephole. I not only don't see things to the right of me, but they don't exist for me until I turn my head to see them. Had to quit driving because I did not see the car I plowed into. It didn't exist until I felt my car hit it.

On the other end of that I see shadow people constantly. It scared me at first but it has been going on for a few years now and I'm used to it. Everything we do is watched. Everything. No one is ever alone. Live like you're in the store window. Because you are.

so how does my brain hallucinate the same reality my dogs and all other living things all see?

the birds my dogs myself we all avoid the same obstacles

so if I am hallucinating my reality, how come every other living thing seems to avoid all the same obstacles I am hallucinating?

the brain does not see actual reality?

then how does traffic work?

all these brains in cars not seeing actual reality

and yet they all see and avoid the same things and try to not hit one another and kill one another

so how come the model of my reality my brain constructs is exactly the same as the reality every other living thing's brain constructs

bugs, dogs, cat, raccoons, opossums deer, bear, people, all crossing the same busy highway, will all get hit by the same oncoming cars

how does a fly's brain construct the same model of reality of the windshield of my car as i do when it flies into my windshield?

the key word is tangible. What you perceive as tangible is a sensory hallucination. Any potentiallly perceived reality can have this sensory aspect, or not, depending on what perceptual manoeuvre you are performing. The issue is, you create reality.

so how come the same tangible car will hit all kinds of different living beings that might run in front of it?

a deer, a dog, a raccoon, a person, all try and avoid the same oncoming traffic to not get hit by tangible cars that will kill them

who is creating the reality in which all living things have to avoid the same obstacles?

so who is creating the reality of the traffic jam at rush hour?

you know the tangible jam of thousands of cars

which person is perceiving things and creating where the other cars and roads and overpasses are?

Thanks for all the replies as I like to see the difference in perception with regards to this subject.

I just find it fascinating as we perceive what we have been told to perceive. I honestly just think it is amazing when it comes to the different theories being either right or wrong etc.

When you look at anything with a microscope you'll see that there's really nothing there but energy in motion.

Your brain and senses are nothing but a machine to convert that energy into something you can interact with.
