Those who went so far as to get full body and facial tattoos will really have it hard. They might even become social outcasts. Quoting: Peepaws That is just nonsense. The practice of tattooing is thousands of years old with the oldest evidence of human tattoos believed to be from between 3370 BC and 3100 BC. Since it has YET, even after THOUSANDS OF YEARS, to become "unpopular, totally uncool and dated" and since nowhere has it YET BEEN said that those with tats are social outcasts, when exactly do you think that will all happen (it won't) and who would even care (no one)? Tattoos span various cultures all across the globe and the business itself is flourishing with the most talented artists of our time - local and national - behind the needle. There are tattoo conventions held every year all over the world where thousands upon thousands participate and countless awards and accolades recognizing tattoo artists and their work are presented. So, what are you even talking about? You may not like or approve of this type of art - and that is your prerogative - but I guarantee that, as an art form and a profession and as a business - it is going NOWHERE. The majority of people who get tattoos - especially those who get full body and facial tats - don't do it to be popular, cool or trendy and could care less what others think about it and why should they? The artistry is often unbelievably beautiful considering it's done freehand with a needle and ink on human skin. Tattoos are a form of expression and the meaning of each, to the person who receives one, is typically very personal. Are some tats distasteful and even scary looking (jailhouse and gang tats, etc.)? Of course, but that goes for anything else we see in modern day society. So what? And for those who have random tattoos and now buyer's remorse, there are ways of removing it so that's no longer a problem. Your statement is laughable but we can, of course, agree to disagree. You, and others who claim "nobody can judge" are de facto NIHILISTS for making that claim because THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT NIHILISM IS - NO STANDARDS. The entire notion of "judging" is based upon standards. No "judging" means no standards. If a member of the general public in a Western socitiety up until recent times got a tattoo they were considered "trash" or a trashy person BASED UPON STANDARDS OF DECENCY. The very notion that a person cannot grasp that fact shows a disconnect from history and culture. Yes, primitive peoples had tattoos and so did military members or gang members, etc. A few men might have also had a single tattoo but nothing extravagent. Outside of such circles it was considered trashy, that is not my opinion but simply a statement of fact. Recent studies have shown that women who get tattoos tend to have more mental illness than women who do not. That would correlate with what many anti-tattoo people believe. A message for those who are triggered - guess what, people have a right to judge what they think of you and in modern times people have considered tattooed people to be trashy. THAT IS THE HISTORICAL POSITION. Prisons are full of tatted-up people and that is no surprise to anyone who supports conventional wisdom or historical understanding. Does having a tattoo or a number of tattoos automatically mean a person really is trashy or a degenerate? Of course not. But anyone who fails to grasp how this is TRADITIONALLY understood is a NIHILIST for their FAILURE to grasp that FACT. They think they ARE ABOVE HISTORICAL UNDERSTANDING just like those who think there is no such thing biologically as a man or woman. Those of you who think you can display yourselves in public and yet not be held to standards are narcissists. It is no different than walking naked in public or with vulgar t-shirts for all to see. People will judge you for having low standards. |

That was a reflection of the STANDARDS people held. There are a lot of films from the 1930's and 1940's where the men and women are all well dressed. Most often the men are wearing suits for example. Again, that is a reflection of their standards. You won't see anyone with tattoos except perhaps a sailor. Those are examples of how far standards have fallen. Additionally, people often used terms such as "sir" or "madam" far more than nowadays. There are many other examples to show that people in general had more class than nowadays. |

I remember in the 80's and 90's dressing up to go to the theater, an awards show, a wedding reception, etc. Nothing is special anymore and it's sad. Dressing up and caring about your appearance is something to look forward to and something you take pride in. The last time I went to a dinner theater several years ago there were people there in sweats, shorts, gym leggings, etc. I will always dress up and care about my appearance. It's something I take pride in. |
